After reading a different discussion I got to thinking about homelessness in America.
There is a big problem in America with homelessness. These are people who are people. But people who are not homeless for the most part do not see this invisible sector of our country. Most of the times when you speak of homelessness everyone jumps on the "lazy" bandwagon. And that infuriates me because not all homeless people are lazy.
If it were not for my father and my uncle I may have had the same views. My uncle was a very intelligent man who traveled around the US, and most people saw him as a vagrant. But he got to know America's homeless people very well and became friends with them. My father, had it not been for my mother and his family, may have also been homeless when he came back from the war.
One in four of our homeless are US vietnam veterans. And also veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are becoming homeless. This is very disturbing because how is that a person can go off to war and fight for our freedoms and rights and come back only to beg on the street while most people turn a blind eye because they think that the beggar is lazy. That beggar was not lazy when they stood up for our rights and freedoms while we stayed home.
And even though my uncle chose to live his life as he did in a sense he was forced to live his life they way he did. And his family was always there for him. His life ended violently and too early. ANd the person who took his life almost got away with it because my uncle was viewed as a "vagrant." But maybe if people would dive down deeper and accept the realities of life we can make a difference.
So when I see a homeless person I think of my uncle, my father, my friends, and basically every person in the world. Because they are people who have families. And I pray even for those who abuse other people's sense of humanity.
So what are your experiences with the homeless?

The reasons that one might be homeless are as varied and nearly as numerous as the homeless themselves. What people fail to realize, is that a large portion of the population is only a few mortgage or rent payments away from being homeless. That our security is tenuous and can be taken away by the loss of a job, or changes in our financial picture.
I don't think that anyone decided one day to just leave their cozy apartment and live on the streets. But once there, there are some who don't take full advantage of programs that could help them off the streets. There are others, for whom the programs don't help enough. Unfortunately, there are some that don't even know where to find help if they want it or need it.

Valid points.
Kinda like you cannot get a job without an address and you cannot get an address without a job.
Very much like the quesiton what came first the chicken or the egg.
And yes it is scary to think we are all one paycheck, etc away from those very circumstances and still people have such callous views on others who are currently in that situation.

My experience comes from actually being homeless as a teenager..Its a hellish existance. Its a cruel and painful one not to mention scary...You are SO RIGHT that not ALL homeless ppl are lazy..just like not all of us CHOSE to live under those circumstances either....Something else ppl tend to not realize is the fact that when you are living (more like surviving NOT living) like that for an extended amount of time the HARDER it becomes to find your way out of it...the longer it goes on the more depressed you become, the more hopeless life seems and the harder it is to think straight etc....
I get SERIOUSLY LIVID wtih ppl who have that "they're lazy/they choose to live like that" attitude because they couldnt be MORE WRONG

I agree.
Oh and I had one correction to my discussion.....although I wish you could edit your discussions on here once posted....so here is my correction.
"one in four homeless are US veterans, not just vietnam veterans."
I haven't checked the stats on teenage homelessness, but I am sure that this high also. And to me that is the most dangerous, because they are our future.
I am glad that you survived.
