INternet: How many windows do you have open and how are they opened?

WIth so much to do on the internet and time being so valuable...having several things going at once while online is often a very common thing to do. So, if you have several things going, sometimes like emails, paid to sites, and things like that, how many windows do you usually have open at once? And do you have them open vertically or horizontally? Then, when subsequent pages open into another window on the screen, that creates yet another one and possibly not the same size.... So... how do you handle multiple windows so that you get the most of your time and everything taken care of and still do it organized so you dont get confused for having to much going at once?

I use horizontal tabs and usually have 8 to 15 tabs open at a time, sometimes more. I don't get confused unless one of them turns out to be bad and crashes the browser, which noscript usually prevents. Even then, FireFox browser usually brings everything back up intact unless I was in the middle of a myLot response when it happened and then the text will have gone south. I multi-task very well in text but can get distracted by sounds, so I compute with the volume control set to off 99% of the time.

Well those are tabs not windows, but I should have said that I also have 2 or 3 browser windows open at a time, too, with several additional tabs in each.

At this exact moment I have the following open: - One Firefox window with 13 tabs (including gmail, flickr and facebook, amongst others) - One firefox window with 8 tabs (all pages of a hamster forum) - One firefox window with tabs 8 (all youtube) - One firefox window with 2 tabs (a free sms site) - One flock window with 8 tabs (including clixsense and bux.to, amongst others) - One flock window with 28 tabs (all mylot) - iTunes - one explorer window I try to group websites into windows, so that I have money making sites in one window, forums in another, communication such as email, facebook and myspace in another... All my windows are full size, so only one is visible at any one time. I hate to have several windows on screen at the same time, it just confuses me.

YOu can do all that at once and then say multiple windows open at once confuses you??!! LOL!! I was confused by the time I got to the middle of what you have open!!! Just gotta ask - why do you need so many open at once? Am I missing something good here? Good grief, I'm lucky to be able to deal with four open at once and one browser!

Hey, as long as it works for you, that is all that matters! I learned in this discussion I was asking the wrong thing - "windows" goes with browswers and Tabs/folders goes with web pages open. I have one window and 4-5 tabs/folders. But at least I understand how it all works now! I ask the wrong question, but get the right answer - go figure! I could follow your example if I had more to do - - okay, maybe not that much, but at least I udnerstand it can happen if I need it to! THanks!

I so know you were going to say that! I was thinking, "I'm making myself sound like a lunatic here..." As for why, I just like having everything there ready for when I need it. It makes sense in my head :P

I usually have e-mail, internet, IM and QuickBooks open at a bare minimum. I have IE 7 so I use tabs for my multiple browser pages, and I change back and forth to the other open programs with my task bar.

Nah, don't feel stupid! We're each doing different things. Most of what I'm doing isn't to make the money, it's just to check things out.

Everyone does so much! I feel stupid asking my question! I have one browser and 4 tabs - and I'm thinking I have so much going! Guess I'd better start doing more! There is so much available to do...just want to do what can earn me some cash!

I have atleast 2 windows opened. I can open tabs in a single window. So I open atleast 5 tabs in a window. In the other window , I just open the site wherein I have to browse or search for something. Because I feel it would be easier to switch on to various windows, if they are tabbed in a single woindow. This helps me to work easier. I do not visit the second window frequently..That is only for searching purpose. I love to save the time at internet.I get only few spare minutes to be online..So I wish I could use the time effectively and productively, instead of searching for a particular window clubbed among a big group.

LOL I have over 20 tabs open at the same time. It's not confusing to me, I move from tab to tab without a problems. Usually if I"m in here I will open discussions in each tab and close them as I respond. In here I don't get new windows opening, but there are some sites where I will, I usually jut minimize them until I'm ready to deal with them.

Most of the time I wind up with about 5 or 6 open. Horizontally. Can you do them Vertical? lol I didn't know that. lol But sometimes I get so many things happening at once that I wind up with about 20 window tabs open so I can go back to them while. I continue to work on the ones I am doing. Sometimes this also require having other browsers up. Like Firefox my favorite. IE cause that page only comes up in IE. Then Opera. another good one. Getting confused? Sometimes. But for the most part I find it easy. I'm thinking of adding another screen to my puter so I can add more, and watch a movie at the same time. lol Think it'll work? I like this topic. Dan

Okay, I have to say first - another screen to watch TV/movies? I want to do that! I am trying to cut my utilities and cable is one I am seriously thinking of letting go - can watch most on internet and sine there is very little worth watching anyway in prime time and I most always just watch food network and few like that, I could just get another PC monitor and conect and watch that way? Any tips? Only problem is that I can't get day time shows ... you know...soaps! Not that I'd let that stand in my way of saving $40 a month, but nice to have! But since I can watch some of the shows on internet, why not just cancel cable! Okay, sounds like you have it under control. I have learned so much from this disucssion and comments like yours. There's a world out there and I just have to learn to use it...only problem is that I am not that busy!!! I have one window (IE) and 4-5 tabs/folders. That keeps me hopping. But I need to try 2 browswers - I have FF, just not familiar as with IE - but maybe I need to get familiar with it and the opportunites will appear! HOrizontally/vertically - I asked that as I didn't understand taht I was asking the right question with the wrong words! "windows" goes with browswers, and tabs/folders goes wtih sites open. I have 1 "window" open and 4-5 "tabs". What I do is minimize them to small - what I was calling 'windows", but it is just the visual of the tab site - and resize them either vertical or horizontal to make them small and have several on the screen at on time. Then I'd have to scroll up and down or right/left and that is tiring!. But now that I know the difference between windows and tabs, it is fitting together better and I understand it. My problem is with IE, the tabs don't have names - just the IE logo so I don't know which tab is for what site! But I figure if I make four - split the screen into 1/4ths and have a tab open in each corner - I could more see what I have - still working on the perfect set up. I am an over-organizer so I figure out how to use it, then have no use for it!

If your looking into trying out FireFox they now have a FireFox 3. It's still in it's beta form so they are working on more add ons and better one for it. So far I really like the way they set it up. I mostly use it cause I like to build web pages. The features really help out the multitasking that I do. As far as Cable? lol I have to agree. You may even be able to find your soaps somewhere online. lol We just got through a big move across the states. Just got the internet hooked up and didn't do cable at least for now. Truthfully I don't really miss it. Adding another screen may require a video card (depending on your computer) to hook it up. It takes 2 monitor inputs to do it. But it sure is cool to have. It literally doubles the space of your screen. lol This post really took off huh? lol

I have exactly one browser window open. Within said window, I can have as many as 40 tabs open at a given time for various tasks. Usually, when I'm up to 40 tabs, I'm reading a sequential comic uploaded to a forum of sorts (4chan, Fchan, etc). I also tend to follow a few links from IRC, so those link to image galleries, forums, etc. I spend more time looking at Instructables than I do here, since Instructables is more my speed. :) So that would account for the mass of my tabs being open. On top of that, I'll protect/lock a tab to make sure it stays, and shuffle tabs around to keep stuff together. :)

First, I have learned I was asking the wrong question, but thanks to this discussion, I have learned windows goes with browswer and tabs goes with sites, kudos to me for learning something new and thanks to all for enlightening me! Anyway, Good Grief - I have to ask - 40 tabs? how do you keep them all so that you know which is which? Mine in IE only have the IE icon and i have to (try) to remember which one was which according to which was opened first. Complicated at times and I only open 4-5 at the same time! I think FF has a name on the tabs? IE doesn't. unless it is there and I dont know it! GOod luck to you in your "tab" world! SOunds interesting. Nice to have what you need as you need it!

Hey coffeebreak~! At any given time, I usually have no fewer than four windows open at a time. One for email, one for mylot, one for LG2 and one for whatever other internet site I am on at the time. They open horizontally along the bottom of my screen and I rarely get them confused. You know me and my obsession for GH, right? Between 3 and 4 pm, I also have my PVR running to watch and take screencaps of GH. My fotki (online picture storage site) and my transcript (closed captioning program) is running. Hubby gets upset that I have so much going on at once, and I admit, I may have to go invest some more memory for my 'puter as well, because sometimes I have to shutdown my email and mylot in this hour (oh no)!!! but this is a way of life for me now. I would go nuts if I could only do one thing at a time. Thanks so much for asking!

You know Liasonfan, you say it is a way of life for you...nothing wrong with that! I am on internet doing many things (wish some of them were finacially lucrative, but alais, they are not!) but I dont' do movies, or other things like that for fun and entertainment, seldom watch TV and the internet and what I do on there are my "life" and my entertainment and my outisde enjoyment as such. So, keep your life going! It is fun isn't it! I have the window icons in the side tool bar (most have that tool bar on the bottom, I prefer it on the left side) and they are all open there - is that what you mean? I was thinking of making at least 4 actually open and on the screen and just shrink the window, but still there visably and just jump from window to window as the time allows. Could be I am trying to make more out of something not necessary, but..that is me! This is where multi tasking was born! Most employers took it to make one salary to cover 3 jobs, but here on the internet, it is a way to keep it all going for sucess!

Right now I have 5 windows open at the bottom of my computer. 1 is donkeymails.com, my email, a website that I am waiting to put a word in but I have to wait an hour after putting in words before and I don't want to lose the word yet b/c i need points bad, this page and the paid link for donkeymail. I tried using those tabs but I always end up closing them before I am finished with the whole thing so I stick to regular windows at the bottom of the screen.

I have been learning and using FF and the open tabs - usually I can do 4 at one time plus IE for my email. Takes some get used to, but boy it sure can be advantageous to have that many tabs open and accessible to work with at once!

When I am mylotting I only have the one window open and I only work on one response a time. I have read where some people here have 4 or 5 windows open and are responding to them all at the same time. I don't know how they can do that, because it would get me confused to what I am saying in each response. When I am reading my emails for money, I open several windows at a time, sometimes up to 15 windows. I read emails from about 20 different sites ans so I just make sure that I only open one email from a site, at a time. It goes really fast this way and only takes me about 2 hours to read them all. If I were to only open one window at a time it would probably take me about 8 hours to read them all.

I learned alot from this discussion. Learned how to utilize Foxfire which has been a HUGE help in my time usage. I do my email in IE and other things in FF at the same time. Rather fun! But I'm with you, I can't have to many open or I forget what they are. FF I can have 4 as I can see the 4 tabs with names on. IE doesn't have tabs nad is a full seperate screen so I was always opening the window I didn't want. But FF sure makes it easier!

From this discussion, most have more than I thought possible open! I also learned it was "tabs" not windows I was asking about - windows goes with the browsers and tabs/folders goes with the sites open. I learned something new in my own discussion! I have also found, I am about the least "busy" on the internet - everyone has multiple "windows" open and tons of "tabs" open! Nice to know it can be done, should it be needed!

Usually at least 5 windows / tabs. My record so far is 40 windows when i'm browsing LOL but it's really not efficient, takes more time too load all those 40 windows and makes the pc runs slower since it use lots of memory and the worst thing i get really confuse with those many windows open, finally i just read a couple of it and closed the rest :p

Wahoo, another Opera user! I love Opera and that is one of the three or four internet browsers I tend to have open at a time, too. Why so many? Each one is better at some things. For instance, the only reason I ever use IE is that some pages will not work right with any other browser. I like to group different kinds of open tabs in different open windows and as some activities are better suite to one browser than another, it is just logical to me to have several open at a time.

Okay, you add another question/option. How many browswer and why? FoxFire and IE - do you have them open same time doing things? I was only questioning about windows for web pages, Like mylot and email and a GPT site or something like that, but multiple browswers too? How do you handle that? I need to look into that to see how it could benefit me! Care to share!

Not pathetic... just doing what you need to do for the things you need to do! Since youwatch tv on internet, do you know where I can find the daily soaps? I can get shows on prime time local channels like ABC etc, but can't find the soaps to watch them daily. ANy suggestions?

When I am reading my emails for money I sometimes have up to 20 windows open at the same time. I don't look at all of them except once I am credited for reading it, I close it. This way I can read them all really fast, since I get about 500 a day. It takes me about 2 hours to read them all. When I am working in mylot I only have one window open and I read it and if I can I respond. I wouldn't be able to do that with several windows open.

I have four open right now. One is a media player as I am listening to a radio station and and one is myLot, one is my Yahoo email and the fourth is a review site. I can rate articles and vote on reviews at two different sites whenever I have a few spare minutes, so I often have both sites open at the same time. I don't like to have too many windows open at one time, it usually varies between two and four.
