My child was confirmed to be profound deaf. She is only 9 months old. We are in the process of choosing hearing aid suitable for her that are cheaper than the ones sold here. I am not sure if it is possible to have it purchased abroad and have an audiologist or ENT to configure and put it to her. Some already knew my story but for some who doesn't, pls check my profile for more detailed info. I had rubella while pregnant. I hope you could enlighten me about this. I know that aside from the hearing aid, she will need other interventions such as speech therapy, etc. I also want her to learn sign language. Thanks a lot.

Hello chrysz, My cousin's twins also is a deaf and only when they were younger, they had hearing aid, I remember, it was only donated after they seek a help from a political figure in our City. There are many organizations who are helping kids in any way, I hope someone can give you any site since I just heard it on TV before and forgot about the org.

Sign language is a very good language to know. You never know when you might meet someone that you can't communicate with by speaking. My mother and I are currently learning it together :) Your daughter is beautiful and very lucky to have you.

Thanks! I am planning in learning ASL too. I'm a SPED teacher but ironically, I am not that fluent with ASL.

I have no advice for you, but I'm really glad you're being proactive in planning for her future. I had a friend who's parents were in complete denial that he was deaf until he was about six. It took him years to catch up, but he manages just fine. He's tried out a bunch of things and they don't think he's a great candidate for the cochlear implant. He signs, reads lips, and has a 'normal' speaking voice from years of speech therapy. Your daughters are both beautiful.

Thanks! I know the risks of having her when I had rubella and I still grateful that she is only deaf. I want her to learn sign language so that she'll realize how blessed she is that even if we are not rich and could not afford things like hearing aid, there are lots of people who would gladly help us provide for her and that she was able to hear. I want her to learn how to listen, not just through her ears but with her heart so aside from the hearing aid, we will try to provide her with all the interventions she;ll need to develop holistically. Thanks again for your time.

I have a twin sister and her boy friend who is deaf. Me and my sister have hearing loss and we wear hearing aids. My sister and her boyfriend 3 yr old son is deaf. He started wearing hearing aids when he was 3 or 4 months old. They took him to the hearing clinic where they do hearing test and told them which hearing aids is best for his hearing loss. Right now he is behind in commucication becasue of his deafness. He is using sign language and picking up new signs. Do you know any sign language? My parents never knew me and my sister had a hearing loss till we were about 5 1/2 yrs old on the day we were at a nursery school and ran when we heard a loud bell rang. The person there mentioned to my mother that if she had us to get our ears checked. She told them the doctors said oh their ears are fine. We were almost was sent to a mental insitution. So she told my mother about the deaf school in Milton, Ontario (about 35 minutes from Toronto). so we went there and my parents finally found why we were acting that way. It was our hearing loss all a long and my parents never knew. Boy doctors back then are dumb and saying we are mentally????

Ironically, there are only few people who are aware that they are indeed hearing impaired and became called with other names. I hope we could have our daughter adjust at once. She had her hearing aids just a week ago.

I was born deaf, I also am called severe profound, bilateral deafness, means I am deaf in both ears. My deafness is herediatary from my dad, he only had deafness in 1 ear, but he had found out about it when he was 5 yrs old. But I was found to be deaf at age 1 yr old. My grandma knew something was wrong tried to tell my mom and dad,but she was right there was something wrong, just deaf. I wear 2 hearing aides by company named Phonak. It is recommended that the audiolgist pick the one right kind for your child if you buy just hearing aide, it not fit for her needs as you need audiologist and hearing tests and the audiogram can show how much lost it been for your child. I grew up Oral because back in 1980s ASL was banned since 1800s after they had met with Milan,Italy to decide what kind of education forum to use for teach deaf students. They believeed back in then that it was better deaf to speak and be like hearing people. But anyways now ASL is popular. Anyways, if you want learn about deaf history get the book called Deaf History. It is a good and long read. You can get ASL dvds everywhere esp www.harriscomm.com
