What are the candidates going to do about teacher pay?

If you ask anyone, he or she will tell you that teachers are underpaid. As a teacher, whenever I hear this, I think "Blah, blah, blah." Recently in my county, the decision was made to not give teachers a much needed pay increase in order to avoid raising taxes. The county board received numerous phone calls about not raising taxes, but did not receive many in support of the teachers. That is blatant hypocrisy. I want to know what the candidates are planning to do about teacher salaries. It is a sad fact that teachers are some of the lowest paid professionals in the country. Many cannot afford to live without having a second job. This causes family problems. Please do not write "I agree that teachers are underpaid" unless you are willing to do something about it. Demand that the presidential candidates make educator pay a priority. If you want a good society, it is important for the most important members, teachers, be taken care of.

I don't think that any of the candidates will do anything to raise teacher's pay. Politicians all just talk in circles about issues like this. Wouldn't you agree that most teacher pay raises occur on the state and local level being that there are fluctuations and declines in teacher pay from place to place?

Yes, it is a local level issue, but since the Department of Education wants to tell us how to teach, then they should pay us as well.

We all know teachers are underpaid, but the power to change this is in the hands of the voters. Most voters are ignorant fools who just want their taxes cut. In Florida voters voted overwhelmingly to cut property taxes in 2007 and 2008. Naturally these tax cuts are coming out of schools, fire departments, police, and libraries. I work in a library and people come in bit*hing about closed book drops, and the removal of a free courtsey phone. They complain about schools but still vote for the tax cuts. For teachers to get more money people have to support higher taxes and the department of education has to be more fiscally responsible. If we can't even do our part there's no way we can count on the board of education to do theirs.
