What are you doing to help the enviornment?

I'd like to hear what others are doing to protect and save our environment for our decendents. I recycle, grow veggies and fruits organically, use solar energy, wood-burning stove (but I plant more trees than I burn... I usually just use branches that have fallen off trees), etc. What are other ways that you are helping to preserve our home (Earth) for future generations?

Love the Earth and I am doing all that I can to not only save it, but to help all species, as well... Take a look at the Venus Project-- There really are some Human beings out there that have great ideas for our future! :) http://youtube.com/watch?v=Cf1gZxmIDKw

We have in our house, a little and handsome garden. Use the fallen branches from the trees, like coconut for heating purposes. Apart from these we used to grow, neem trees, in a vacant area, near my house, which often gives cool and nice breeze during summer months. As a main part of saving of environment, i try to avoid, using the Plastic bags as it never decomposes. Hmmm...other things i don't use vehicle, to go an area which is at walkable distance. Ha..ha.. perhaps going by foot, may be an exercise, in a way helps me to burn out the extra fat in me.

Ha! Awesome! You have some great ideas! I LOVE the going on foot idea. It's a shame that so many people will drive everywhere, even if they can walk. I recently saw a program on TV about obesity and they said that our ancestors, cavemen, were never fat. When our existence depends on our physical attributes, we remain in good health. These days, with so many time-saving devices and automatic everything, we are becoming lazy as human beings and need to go to gyms to exercise or spend money on weight-loss products, when all we have to do is to become more physical again. As far as plastic bags go, I agree with you. I used to get upset seeing how fast those bags accumulate and tried to think up a good way to recycle them. I found a great site with instructions on how to "knit" or "crochet" plastic bags into things like rugs or handbags! I'm now working on a cover for my car that I can slip on if snow or storms with hailstones are predicted. I also use canvas bags when going grocery shopping and use them instead of the plastic bags. If I need more plastic bags for my knitting projects, I'll just get more when I go grocery shopping. I never thought I'd run out of those plastic bags and need more!

I am using a lot less energy at home. Since I spend most of my day at the coffee shop anyway, I'm saving a lot on hydro, because I'm just not using it!! Also, if it looks like they are going to hand me a papr-cup, I insist on a mug, since they are reuseable.

Let me first apologize for my late response. Things just got out of hand around here lately. Yes, people don't realize that they can bring in their own cups as well! I would much rather use reusable products than 'throw-aways'. Some people don't realize that they can go spend a day in a coffee shop, mall or grocery store, wandering around on really, really hot days to save on air conditioning! I'd much rather use someone else's air conditioning than pay for my own.

It is very interesting that I passed on you post as I was watching something on tv about how the oil fields are drying up. But the worst part of it is, with the use of the buring the oil products it has released carbons back into the atmosphere which cause the green house effect so bad it would slowly kill us. Hmm. And I thought gas over $4/g was bad! What I do is recycle, give things away that are useful (goodwill, salvation army, freecycle), use natural cleaners and leave my car at home as much as possible. With China and India coming online with excessive carbon usage...I don't think it will do much good though! Nice smile in your pic! I can see why you use it!

Thank you for the compliment! I apologize for just getting to your response. This post got out of hand! LOL Anyway, I do the same as you, donating to charity organizations, use natural cleaners, etc. I know exactly what you mean about China and India. I saw that on TV, too. It makes you think "why bother?" Well, the only answer that I can think of for that question is that we can feel good about ourselves for doing what we can. It may not make any noticeable difference overall, but it will still have a small impact, if only in our own lives. If we waste less, we'll save more, personally speaking. I LOVE the idea of never paying the electric companies another penny! They overcharge soooo much! I've invested in enough solar panels to run my office, light up our deck, put Christmas lights on trees outside, light the driveway, charge our 12-volt batteries, stuff like that. I'm waiting now on those printable solar panels to come out on the market. They're supposed to be really inexpensive and should be out as early as next year.

I try to be conservative. I'm interested in alternative energy sources and have looked into solar panels, but so far I don't think I'm making a difference. I hope to do better in the future.

There's a company that is working on "printable" solar panels! These things actually work! If I had the money, I'd invest in that company now because I can see it making a fortune once it puts this invention of theirs on the market. The panels, well actually, you would buy the "kit" to print these out yourself... I believe it's a special printer you buy... they're paper-thin, flexible and can be installed anywhere there is sunshine. I believe I read that these things may be available by next year. They're also supposed to be extremely inexpensive compared to today's solar panels. I'm holding out for them. I have some solar panels that I use to operate things like my office, recharge 12-volt batteries, provide light on our deck, decorate trees outside for Christmas, stuff like that. But now I'm waiting for these printable ones to come out before I invest any more money into it. So, keep an eye out for these things. It shouldn't be long now before they're out and on the market.

I am trying to build a small garden in my house. I have grown some vegetables and grapes. I am trying to buy solar power system in the future. Right now it is too expensive for me. I also use buckets to collect rain water during the rainy season and bath in rainwater. I am thinking of buying a rain water system with which I will be able to use natural water to large extend rather than pipe water. I use cycles sometimes and try to save fuel in my vehicle.

This is a very good discussion you've started.Personally,i am very concern about this and it has made me to encourage as many people as possible to turn to water for fuel Technology in their engines,or use mpg caps and other products to reducts to reduce enviromental pollution and global warming. Another means, like a business though, but all they deal with or discuss there is about 'green',a place where gardeners & growers from around the world can share tips and comments! A place to ask questions and we can share the answers!

I use reuseable cloth bags when I shop and do not get a lot of plastic bags anymore. I do most of my house cleaning with dish soap and vinegar. I buy very little food items that come in boxes. I wake up with the sun and go to bed earlier. I get my news on the radio. I gave you five so give me five!
