Is it me?

My daughter (19) told me earlier today that she was going out tonight. It's saturday, she's young, sounded entirely plausible to me. She then told me that she would be going out at about 10.30 pm! Now, in my innocence I did not imagine that anywhere would be open for too long at that time of night. The restaurants are largely closed, the pubs, although they can be open 24 hours, are largely closed by midnight. But there are the clubs! They stay open until about 2 or 3 am. In my day, we went out at about 7.30 and got home around midnight. A little later if we were daring. Our parents would be in bed, but would really be awake and waiting. Of course I grew up in the country where often the most exciting thing to do was watching the church clock hands move. But even if we wanted to go out later, there just weren't the venues. What time did you go out on a saturday. If you are a parent, do your children not go out until late and do you wait up for them, even if it means not getting to sleep until the very mall hours. Do you yourself go out late at the weekend on a regular basis?

I will sometimes go out after work and grab a few drinks. Notice I say never just one. It's usually around midnight or so if I don't want to go home right away. We have some bars here open until 4 AM so I have plenty of time to get my skinny drink on. If my daughter was 19, I wouldn't mind if she went out late as long as you know she is being safe. Any younger then I wouldn't let them go out terribly late. I would have to put my big purple shoe down.

Hardly seems worth the effort if you are going for just one drink. These days I can't stay awake much later than midnight - except on myLot for some reason!

During my party days at Butlins, we would go out about 9pm, maybe 9.30pm depending if we are all ready and jump in to the taxi or across the road and move on the nightclubs and make our way home about 2am to pester teh nice security men on the gates!!! If we were staying on site and visiting the venues we wouldnt be out long, depending what acts were on!!

It is so annoying how you mention you worked at Butlins and everyones response is "where you a Redcoat??" You would think that was the only job going, noone thinks about who cooks their meals, serves them drinks, looks after their children, make sure the camp is secure etc!! It was even worse when we had red uniforms!!! I worked in the Nursery looking after the guests children and staff children, did babysitting services, worked in the bar, did Welcome Team (greeting guests and showing them where their accommodation and answering and questions.) I was Jack of all trades me - anything to earn extra drinking money!!!!

well, my parents never allowed me to go out that late as well... i have to be back maximum by 10 pm and if i am not, then they will be busy calling me on my mobile... and i will get into trouble when i get home... so i think the time has changed now... but still, i never like to go out at night anyway... i prefer to stay at home and spend time in front of TV and read books or sleep... take care and have a nice day...

That's not really that uncommon anymore. Most of the clubs don't open till late and even then don't start getting busy till later still. We did the same thing when I was younger. We'd have a couple of drinks at home and then head out to the clubs around ten o'clock and that was earlym as we wanted to find a decent spot to situate ourselves.

When our boys were teenagers, if they went out, we would be awake, waiting until they came in which was usually around midnight on a Friday and if they said they were going anyplace else, they said they would call, but never did and we learned they went to their friend's house, and then to another friend's house and so on, and even though there was a phone, no one knew how to use it. We decided that they could bring their friends over, bring along sleeping bags and sleep either in the basement or the living room floor. At least then we knew where they were.

That seems very sensible. Better to know where they are than not.

When I started going out ten years ago, I was 16 years old and my mother would let my go out ones a month. I left at around 10 o'clock and would be home at 4 o'clock (and not a second later or next month was off limits). After my 18the birthday I didn't have a curfue, but I was always home around the same time. I just could go out more often, so I would go every saturday. 5 years ago I was out one relation and was alone (still lived with my father), I worked in a town where my best friend lived, so every weekend I stayed there from friday evening till monday morning. Friday we would go to a karaokebar till 2 in the morning. Saturday we left to another town to go clubbing. Because we went with public transportation we would be there around 10 pm and take the first bus back at 8 am. Don't know if I still can do that, know I'm used at getting to bed early and getting up early with my two brats at home LOL

I'm 21 now, and from when I was about 17, it was normal for us to go out about 10pm, and return home around 3 or 4am. Most clubs don't open until around 10pm, and if they're open before, they're usually very empty. Obviously, it's not the sort of thing I could do every night, but I think on a Friday or Saturday night, especially for a 19 year old, it's natural. I can understand about parents waiting up though, but mine were never still up at 3am! I think they trusted me to be sensible, or to ring them if there was a problem.

When I was growing up, I am like you..LOL, as much as we want to enjoy outside, there will be no place for us to hang out! But, when I started College, My sister and I had all the freedom and time to go out but, we still discipline ourselves, we use to go home like 10 pm after walking in the Boulevard and spending time there eating and talking with friends. If I will be a parent, i will be ok as long as I know where are they going and who are with them. Need to know the friends or else, you know, lots of bad influence these generations!

when I was a young teenager I had to be in by midnight or else. I also had the same curfew for my son when he was in his teens too. no problems there. .I am an old stick in the mud and do not go out much at night but I have a standing dinner date with my friend Nelda and we go out together every other Wednesday night. we are really tame as we get together at sixand come come home by nine. on the weekends I stay home, getting too old to be out late at night.lol

My oldest is 10 years younger than your daughter, so this hasn't hit home for me yet. But in my town all the guys with the hot rods hang out in the mall parking lots till wee hours of the morning. They sit there listening to music, hoppin their hydraulics, burnin out...whatever. So its nothin to see teens and young adults out around 10:30 till about 2 when the cops start to shut them down. I myself would prefer to go out around 9 or 10 if I plan to do some dancing, that's when the bands start playing and the good music sarts up.

I do not go out late at night, i am to old for such foolishness. I can't see my 19yr. old going out at that time of the night either. I understand that she is grown but if she is living in my home and being supported by me she is going to show a little more consideration because yes i would stay awake until she got home safe. I have a 27 yr. old daughter so it hasn't been that long ago that i had a similar conversation.

I shan't stay awake for her for too long. I used to when she was younger, but now that she is an adult she can come and go as she wishes. I just don't understand where this late night nigth life comes from. When I was young everything was closed by midnight. Those were the days.

I dont think 2am is late-heavens when I was her age i thought nothing of strolling in at 5am going to bed then being up and ready to be at work for 8am for my weekend job! However I did always make sure someone knew where I was. Long as shes with friends she should be fine.

It's not really the lateness of the hour, it's the concept that places don't even open until most people are going to bed! However, I was as bad myself - if I could get away with it.

before we usually go out late at night(my husband and i) to do some ballroom dancing or just like to hear some live bands in clubs during weekends...but i guess it stop when all our children were in college..you know the budget and everything..actually im very strict to my daughters...i really dont allow them to go out during the night..coz i think that they are not still old enough to take care of themselves ...

I don't know how old your daughters are Vanities. Mine is legally an adult and so she has to make her own decisions. It's the time that they go out though. Then they spend the next day in bed!

When I went to clubs with some of my friends, we didn't usually go to the club until around 10 or so. I didn't go very often, though, because I don't really dance much, or drink for that matter (I was under age anyway, though). I would just go to hang out with my friends who enjoyed dancing and/or drinking. Anyway, most clubs where I'm from don't really start picking up until after 10 pm. They are open until 130 am. And they are usually most crowded from around 1130-1230. Oh, and I'm 25, this was about 4-6 years ago.

Oh My p1ke I never took you for an old fogey now I am having to reconsider! lol When I was your daughters age even a bit younger we did the very same and that was a long time ago! I used to pick my Grandad up from an evening at the pub and have a pineapple juice while he finished up (he was never ready when he said he would be) and drop him off at home! He was forever moaning that it was time to be coming home when we were going out so I told him I would gladly go out earlier if he liked but then I would not be able to pick him up and drive him home - that made him think! lol I always tried to come in very quietly and would tiptoe up the stairs , when I got to the top there would be a loud cough to let me know he had heard me and knew what time it was! lol Once he thought he might fall asleep so placed a kitchen chair with its back facing the front door put a metal tray on top balanced against the door and piled some pots on top - when I got in all hell broke loose and the whole street woke up and knew what time I got home - this was when I was 26 and had moved home after the break up of my marriage! lol I miss him so much sometimes! xxxx

He was a very amazing man - too amazing sometimes! lol I know what you mean about the energy of youth - I wish I had some of that too! See Dad may be an old fogey but at least he is a good taxi! xxxx

1 Jun 08
LOL. That must have been such a shock an very very funny. He sounds great and I can see why you must miss him. That image is going to be in my head for a long while now. It's not so much the old fogey in me, well it is, but that places are only just opening at a time when most people are coming home. I drove her into town last night at 10.45. Half the street was "oldies" like me heading home for bed, and the other half were her age heading into town for dancing. She came home somewhere between 3.30 and 4 and spent ages on the phone then! The girl she was talking to is now here watching films with her. They must both be exhausted. Oh for the energy of youth.

Yes, 10 o'clock or so sounds about right for me, and I'm 30 I go to places such as a friends house or to my mother's house in the country where we can have bonfires, where as in the city, it is prohibited. Every now and then, we hit up a bar. For your daughter being so young, I would say it's natural to want to be out late. Maybe just reassure her how stupid drinking and driving is, because could very well be drinking - I was going out late and drinking at 19 (thank God I didn't like it much, though) If she's 'a good kid', she will probably be fine, and if you're a 'concerned parent' - you will be fine too! Let it roll off your back; she will tire of it soon enough.

Completely behind the times..living in a time warp..thats the words that spring to mind here...and lol that goes for us both!!to go out at 10.30 ..well the thought would kill me now!!By then im tucked up ..or at least thinking of tucking up with Graham.....when I was in my teens there was no way that my nights would very often be allowed to finsh much after 10-10.30..I remember quite plainly that I used to do my `goodnights` by our garage at the end of the lane..and every now and agian there would be a voice booming out over the airwaves, which of course was Mother...."Do you know what the time is??"..well of course I did...and Mother did very little for my street cred....we had to get a specail `pass` from Father to be allowed to stay out any later at night, and those werent granted too often. At 16 I used to go into the White Hart in warminster with a boyfriend..his Dad was always in there..and he used to ask what I wanted to drink..I always replied..A juice please..he always bought me a Babysham..with a cherry...When my girls started going to Oscars which used to be at Longleat..they had to have a taxi back..they used to roll in at gone one o clock..either smiling ..if they had `pulled`...or deflated if they hadnt...but usually I was always awake..but strangely enough I can never remember worrying too much about them..but that was a good few years ago.

I remember Oscars - it's closed now. Too much criminality linked to it I think. But those Warminster girls. Fuelled up on Babychams and Snowballs. LOL. I can't manage to be out too late these days. But then I would never have been allowed to sleep all the next day. So if I didn't get home at a sensible time then the next day was torture. Says the man that left home at 16! But I was equally disciplined on my own. Shame I can't be like that with myLot where I stay up far too late.

Yes sit has closed now...it was a bit out of the way though...it cost me a small fortune in taxi fares for the girls!!..lol and those Warminster girls were something else!!!rofl...I also used to go to the town hall dances and there was a cafe which I dont know whwether you will remember called The black and white cafe...full of Hells angels..and Ruby.....but Oh what fun we had..and I swore to Mum that id never ever gone thru the door!!!!.....
