Trolls Be Gone...You Have No Power Here...

Just about any site online has its share of troublemakers…their called trolls. Trolls are ppl that deliberately try to cause trouble. Usually to either get a member kicked out or to disrupt a site. I belong to a couple of sites, including MyLot, which has its share of these trolls. The best advice ppl can follow is Don’t Feed The Trolls. That simply means don’t give in to them. If you do, you’re simply feeding into them and allowing them to do just what they’ve set out to do. Now this isn’t directed at any one person here…I’ve been fortunate enough that I haven’t run into any yet. At least I don’t think so. Trolls can be very tricky...they may disguise themselves to look like a friend. As with anything, whether on the Internet or in real life, you have your good apples and bad apples. The trick is to find the bad ones, get rid of them and keep the good ones. After all you wouldn’t throw out a whole bag of apples b/c you found one worm. BTW, the pic included has some very good troll info on it. What is your definition of a troll? Have you ever run into one? What’s your advice for avoiding them? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

This is the only chat site I now belong to, all though I have tried others and didn't like them as much as mylot. I have had trouble with one member here, and yes, I fed her when she first started to harrass me. After reporting her about 50 times to mylot, I don't think she is here anymore, at least I never see her anymore. She just didn't like me and she went to my profile and started responding really nasty, to all of my discussions. For every one of her responses that were nasty, I reported it as abuse. After about 50 reports and a couple days of this, she finally has stopped harrassing me and I haven't seen her anywhere here since, so I am assuming mylot got rid of her. Like you said, every site will have some trolls, and I have now learned to not feed them, as you put it.

Yes, the trolls are everywhere. If there is a rating system, they love to rate low. Sometimes they just rate and run. Other times they stay and want to argue, not discuss. Sometimes a particular troll will take such a dislike to someone the he/she will follow that member to other sites to harass as well. I don't understand it. Life is too short to be so mean and negative as trolls can be. While I might comment to them, I try not to get into debates.

I have not run into any Trolls on mylot yet,it has been a fun site for me and if I do I will do my best to avoid them just because I am a Lover not A fighter,I do my best to get along with All of God's People no matter what they or I believe We can Still All get Along. In my life I guess I don't let Bad Apples in maybe because I don't have any.You have a Great night.

I feel the same way you do, don't give into them. I don't think that I have run into any here or on any site, for that matter. But if I were to run into one, I wouldn't give into them or anything.

I don't know that I've run into a troll. I really do not thing so. I didn't even know what one was until reading your post. I too go to other sites and I have read in posts that mylot may be a sham. I don't think it is and this may be one of the trolls you speak of. I guess it's someone that wants to start trouble where ever he/she can. You are right if you fee into this you give them what they want. Sometimes I wonder if that's what someone is doing that is always negative and fights with people. Then I realize that there are just people that are this way. Or am I wrong? I avoid or try to avoid confrontations. I say what I feel and let them say their feelings and then drop it, (with them anyway).

Unfortunately a few people have already been run off by trolls since I've been a member. Sad really. I actually took about two weeks away from mylot because of a small group that kept poisoning every discussion I started. I wouldn't respond to them. Hopefully now I'll have some peace here. The mylot vacation did wonders for my house though... it is sparkly! I'm glad you have had only good experiences here twoey!

I haven't run into any trolls and I usually miss the whole discussions when they do show up. But, I did want to tell you that I love your Topic there. It reminded me of a line from a movie that my kids just loved - Labrynth with David Bowie.

I agree. I am in a couple of other sites also besides mylot. I have learned when people or trolls as you call them cause trouble I get away from the discussion and stop responding to them.

If I recall, a troll is what lived under a bridge and wouldn't let anyone pass till they knew the answer to a riddle or question. In other words, the troll was a mean troublemaker. I've had my share of them over at pogo.com and the best advice is yours...ignore them. Don't say a word to them or about them to friends out in the open where they can read it as well. I had one troll here that really did try to get me to say something to him/her..anything but I just ignored them and moved on. Few days later they gave up. You can't avoid them really, just ignore them and they will move on to the next victim.

I think they should be called trollers instead because really the ones you describe are just fishing for trouble. Trolls are perfectly respectable storybook characters and I do hate to see them maligned. My favorite trolls are the Norwegian rainbow haired trolls. Of course you can see from my avatar why I would like things with rainbow colored hair. But those trolls are so cute. Even the big ugly trolls in those wonderful old stories serve a purpose. But the people who disrupt in forums serve no purpose at all. They are more like zombies, I think, that the living. I think it is best to look right through them as though they don't exist.

Ah yes, trolls infest the net. They have changed since the beginning. Early trolls liked to pop onto a site leave a few inflamattory posts and then would sit back and watch the mayhem, but you would never see them again. The new style troll seems to like to keep the madness going, they will stay around and post more. Best advice "Don't feed the trolls, they bite."

Apparently I was just "attacked" by "trolls"... within minutes my rating dropped by like 14 points or something... don't really know how or by who, but it was unexpected.

I have run into a couple of them. They are the ones who make it a point to attack you over the beliefs that you have and the opinions that you express. As far as avoiding them, I state my opinion and usually leave it at that unless there is something that deserves further comment. If I am attacked then I just thank the person for responding and tell them to have a nice day which is my way of telling them to piss off, and then no longer respond to them in that conversation.

My definition would be exactly what your pic says! That's adorable! I've been quite suspicious that I've run into one, or possible a pack of them, because my star sure has taken a beating more than once. I think you have the right idea, just ignore them and don't let them "win"! I've had people who have argued with me, who have called me names and insulted me and who have accused me of starting "fights" but I can deal with that. I'd rather someone do that so I have a chance to defend myself and try to get it all aired out so to speak but when they go around and give out the minuses that's like what a grade school kid would do. I can see how misunderstandings can easily happen on a forum like myLot because we all have our own style of writing and expressing our opinions and when it's in writing instead of verbal communication there is no tone or inflection in the voice to indicate humor or wit. I grew up in a household where heated political discussions were the normal topic of conversation at the meal table and they often included sarcasm and even good-natured name calling so I know it wouldn't be unheard of for me to revert back to my youth when I get in a heated debate here so all I ask is for my fellow members here to confront me about it and if I was out of line I'll certainly apologize and it won't happen again with the person who I've offended because that is not my intent here. As a child, I was fascinated by the tales of trolls under bridges! My youngest child recently attended a showing of the "Wizard Of Oz" and she thought the monkeys were trolls! I am guessing that ignoring them is the best way! As for knowing who the trolls are or avoiding them altogether, I know not, which path to choose!

The parenting site I visit has a few issues with naughty members, but we try and defuse potential problems with the reporting system we have. The site admins also have made it pretty clear that if we keep our naughty behaviours up, then we get a 48 hour site suspension, which means we can't use our loggins for that amount of time. Thankfully, I've never come close to that punishment, though now of a few members who have. No matter where we go there are going to be trolls. We just have to rise above their behaviour and keep going as though they don't exist.

I haven't ran into the trolls so far, though i have seen several discussions on them. I don't try to avoid them and I don't try to find them either. If one day they find me, then so be it. I am one that believes that what you do to others comes back to you.

I don't know if the trolls will come after me or not.I don't worry,I do this for fun as much as money.I try to give good responses in discussions. For some I read,I have nothing to say.Just remember trouble makers always get what's coming to them in some way.
