Do you know what a Doula is?

I am actually studying to become a Doula at the moment, and I love it, I feel as if I have found my calling in life, it is something I am really passionate about. I find though when I am telling others all about my studies, they ask me halfway through my conversation 'What is a Doula though?'. Before I start blabbering on about my passion, I would like to hear what others think a Doula is, or in fact if you do know what one is!
