does white lie a sin?

im kinda confused if white lies are considered sins, if u spill out a white lie that means u want to cover up some mess for a person. but is it still a lie when in fact u just want to help a person?

i think we can do white lie, as long as it's purpose is helping others. but we should remember that between white lie and "black lie" is only a thin layer. i'm not talking about sins. i'm just talk about the proper things we should do or the unproper things we shouldn't do. thx.
