I have a 12 year old daughter. I try not to spoil her because I don't want her to be bratty. I try to reward her for things she does rather than just hand her things. I think children who are just handed things adopt a sense of entitlement. I don't want my daughter to be like that. I want her to know she has to work for things she wants. That way when I am gone she will be self-sufficient. I think every parent wants to spoil their children, but there has to be a limit. If a kid kicks and screams because he/she is told no, it's time to tell that kid no more often.
I do reward my daughter for a job well done. Last year she brought home a great report card so I took her out and bought her a pair of Heelys. Her report card wasn't as good as it should have been last time around, but she will probably bring it up this marking period as she is a good student and realized the last report card didn't well...make the grade. If she brings it way up I will probably buy her something or do something special for her.
It's just a matter of knowing when enough is enough. It's always great to give our kids stuff, the problem is when they start expecting it.
