Do lions and tigers purr? I believe that only domestic cats purr. Am I right?

After graduating from veterinary school I was lucky enough to get a fellowship to travel to a zoo.I used to wonder, as you do, whether the big cats do indeed purr. They certainly do, and it’s the most amazing and thrilling noise. I used to take my holiday break and hang out near a resting tiger in the zoo, listening in awe at the power of its purr.

I went to South Africa in January and was lucky enough to pet a cheetah. There was a brother and sister that couldn't survive in the wild, so they were being taken care of and the female liked to be petted (the male wasn't so happy with it).
It was the most beautiful, fleecy thing. She liked licking my partner's hands (mine had sun lotion on) and we were told that she had an incredibly loud purr, but she was in and out of napping when we saw her so unfortunately we didn't get to hear it.

well... i think they do..
but i don't think it's going to be the soft type of purr you hear from the smaller breds of cats
i kinda wonder how they really do sound like..
