I dont mean notes that look scatty and wrinkled with age!!
I mean the 'old version' of the £5 and £10 notes. Last week I had to refuse payment from two customers as they had old £5 notes, this annoyed them and they asked me when they went out of date!! It must bout 9-10 years now (i think) It was bizarre as I was at two different stores (i think it was the same lady!!) and another cashier today had to refuse the old £10 from a chinese girl.
Where are they getting them all from?? I thought they had all gone out of circulation???

Really there are still outdated five and tenner circulating? That must be awful getting one and not being able to spend it. If they have been obsolete about a decade ago why not just keep them for souvenir and maybe one day they will cost a lot as a collector's item.
I'm new in England and I don't know which ones are outdated. I hope I don't get any of them.

With the fivers, as long as it has Elizabeth fry on the back and not George Stephenson (I think) then its fine. These were withdrawn on 21 November 2003. The tenners should have Charles Darwin on, and not Charles Dickens then your fine. These were withdrawn on 31 July 2003.
Just found a real useful page about Bank notes of the pound.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknotes_of_the_pound_sterling#The_question_of_legal_tender
Hope this helps you. Thank you for your comment!

Glad to have helped, though if you do get one, the bank should change it for you if not keep it as a souvenir!!

Amazing! I don't deal with public cash like that so I've not seen the old notes for years. Maybe they were just printed? haha
I got stopped short when an old £20 note of mine showed up as a forgery. I took it back and gave her another one and then spent the forged note somewhere else.
What is irritating I got the forged note in a bundle from the bank!

I work in a supermarket so handle money daily. Its also annoying when people use other coins to pass for 10p, 2p and 1p!!!
We dont check all notes but I have seen a couple of forged notes and it does irrate the person!!
Unbelievable that you got one from the bank!!

In theory, they should be out of circulation by now, but there's always the odd couple that turn up. All that happens when a note's design is changed, is that the new one is printed and the old one is not. The old notes stop going round, because they are spent, and then given in to the bank. The only places that are obliged (I think) to take old notes, are banks.
Obviously, the whole thing is dependent on people spending the notes. If they've been hoarding them under mattresses, then the old ones are still going to turn up.

Yeah i know that the bank can change them and I explined this to the customers but they were very annoyed that I had to refuse the note as its not legal tender!! Though saying the bank takes them, I know someone who got given a old £5 note out of the ATM machine!!
Its amazing what people hoard under the mattress!!

yes. they should be out of the circulation by now but there are people that still have these notes. it is impossible to get rid of them. for me, too bad i wasn't able to collect old notes. they are collectibles now since the the government doesn't produce them anymore.
