I put a measuring cup full of water in the microwave and turn it on for a few minutes. Then I take the water out and use a wet sponge to wipe it out. The heat and moisture from the hot water helps loosen any buildup in the microwave making it easier to clean.

That all depends on how dirty the microwave really is. If the splatter is from the time I use the microwave I will take a hot hot wash cloth and wipe it out. If it has been left on for awhile then it is water in a glass, measuring cup etc and put it in for a few minutes. The moisture from the water heating up will help loosen things. Another thing that I use as well is something called Tough and Tender. It is a solution from a company called Melaluca.
