Breastfeeding until 5 years old

I've only heard of those who breastfeed this long, never met anyone. My landlady tells me that she breastfed her daughter until she was three years old. Then she had a celebration/weaning cold turkey day where they went to a hot springs resort with a group of my landlady's female friends and celebrated the sort of rite of passage. To many, this is too old - if a kid is asking in full sentences and is that big...but it many cultures and perspectives its not. What about you? What age do you feel is the right age and what makes you feel this way?

I'm sure she wasn't nursing the three year old constantly. Perhaps at that point it was just comfort nursing. Before naps, etc. I think I'd have to be put in the situation before I could answer honestly.

You're likely right - my son is a year and a half - and thats when I nurse him - before naps or if he's gotten upset. Thanks for being honest - about being able to answer honestly if in the situation.

When I had my first child I thought, "There is NO WAY I would nurse a baby that is walking!" Then I has my second child; he nursed until he was 13 months. My third child nursed until she was 15 months. My last child...is going on 26 months and is still nursing. She mainly only nurses first thing in the morning now though. She wants to nurse more often sometimes but most of the time I can distract her. I am more than ready for her to wean but she is highly against it. I think everyone is different. I can't see myself nursing past three years old; but then again...I couldn't imagine nursing a kid that could walk either. I hope upon hope that she doesn't want to nurse anymore by 3 years old. I am ready to have my body back to myself.
