Does wearing Gucci or Prada earn you respect?

I just read an online advert which invited me to purchase a Gucci purse. It said by purchasing a Gucci purse I will be envied by my friends. But, I ask why would I want to be envied for wearing a Gucci purse. Have we not got our values screwed up?
