I think that many of the sayings we call Superstitions are really cautionary tales told in a way that when we hear them as children we remember them. Think about it, don't walk under a ladder, we could be hurt by a falling can of paint, shoes on a table, dirt can get on our food. There really our to many to put here but if you think about them this makes sense. I am not saying all our ways of telling us to be careful but I bet most are.

I'm not superstitious. Most of the modern superstitions are outdated or psychology based or just plain common sense. Take walking under a ladder. Yeah, bad luck for the person up the ladder if you knock them off it! Breaking a mirror gives you 7 years bad luck? Um, only if the mirror was an antique and you have to pay a pretty packet to pay for the damage. Black cats are unlucky. Ok, this one is interesting. It was originally white cats that were unlucky, pure white cats with blue eyes that is. Why? Because these cats were completely deaf and couldn't hear you coming along, so wouldn't move leaving you to trip over them. There are many more, but I've given the ones I can think of. Most of the urban legends/myths like Bloody Mary do work. Why? Because the hype of the story gets the person doing the prank so scared they keel over and die from a heart attack. Their own belief that she would come through the mirror killed them, not the legend itself.
