If you have to drive within 5 hours of road trip do you fly or drive? I recently drove from Monterey, CA to Fort Bragg, CA to meet up with my nephew. It was a long drive epsecially thru traffic, but yet it was nice to see the country side. I have never driven that far in California and in the mountains. If there was a flight that flies there I think next time I would fly (however; I don't think there were flight there), but for first time it's alright to drive to sight see. What would you do fly or drive? Take in consideration the gas price and the hassle of the airport security.

I would definitely drive. Even though the price of gas is horrible, I do not like flying, and the extra time spent at the airport makes flying less time efficient. Also, given I can get approximately 24-26 miles per gallon on the highway, the cost of driving 500 miles would still only be about $150 (accounting for return trip as well). It is hard to find an airline ticket anywhere for less than that. Carpool with a friend and it would be split in half. Also, I can bring whatever I want in my car, and not have to pay extra! It is definitely more convenient to drive, and with the airline industry the way it is right now, I don't even trust the airlines to stay in business long enough to honor a ticket. I would definitely want to drive anywhere within 500 miles. Though another option would be to take a train. The train is a great way to travel without the stress of driving. Just sit and watch a movie, read a book, or watch the scenery go by. :)

We're going to a family reunion this weekend, it's 5 hours away and we're driving. If we fly it would cost almost 10 times as much, take the same amount of time and we'd still have to drive half an hour to the airport and an hour and a half from the other airport to our final destination. We don't usually need to go anywhere further than 5 hours away, but I have driven most of the way across the country before.

First, I want to say I LOVE Monterey!! We drove there about 4 months ago and had a fabulous time! Pre-daughter I would have driven the five hours. I like the scenery and stopping to do things along the way. I am also a very nervous flyer and often get sick when in an airplane. Now that I have a toddler daughter, I would much rather fly. It is worth the puking to get there sooner and for her to have a little wiggle room on the plane.

For a 500 mile trip I would drive because it would be too much of a hassle to fly. The nearest air port is over an hour away and then there's the waiting and standing in lines, so I'd rather go according to my own schedule. With a vehicle that has good gas mileage, the cost would probably be less for me because I'm not going alone so flying would entail the purchase of two tickets and listening to my husband complaining because he hates to fly.

hey.. driving there is much cheaper thought but you will have to sit in the car for hours where you can take the easier way put.

If it is only 500 miles I would definitely prefer to drive instead of flying. Even if I did consider flying, the nearest major airport is either Sacramento or San Fransisco which is both over 200 miles away from where I am living. I live in Redding, California and the airport here isn't too big. The prices are also expensive so I'm better off driving.

I think that with prices and fuel economy, a small trip like that (and that's a relatively small trip), I would go ahead and drive. Our car gets nearly 40 miles to the gallon on the freeway, and one tank will usually get us close to 400 miles, so it's not too big of a deal to drive it. Plus, I do like the convenience of having our car wherever we go; we don't have to wait on anyone else or have it to where we're constantly needing rides. I also live in California and, to me, there is no more beautiful place to drive, anyways!

We drive. My hubby and I live in Georgia while our families live in NY and Ohio so, when we want to visit them in the summer, we drive that distance. It takes forever but, we do it anyway. But, in the winter, for Christmas, we fly to see them. It is just easier since neither of us is really that comfortable driving on snow anymore. And, it isn't so much about cost as far as driving vs flying. We take the dog with us when we go visit in the summer. And, we are both unwilling to chance what could go wrong by flying with out dog. So, it is just better for all if we drive during the summer. Plus, we like to get out and explore the areas and do our own thing sometimes (you know...get away from the family for some peace and quiet for an hour or so) and, with out own car, we can do that easier. And, the hubby still has friends that live in the area so, when we visit NY we like to go see them...again, I good reason for a car. We don't really desire to get out into the cold during the winter so, there is even less reason to have a car then. LOL!
