How fair is Welfare?

I do not know about the welfare systems in other countries, but I do know from others here in the U.S. how backwards it can be. I know there are people who abuse the system to keep from earning a living the old fashioned way, but there also are people who even while working need a little extra help. ANd I know someone who earned $50 more than the cut off limit (and that was based on gross income not after taxes) and so the foodstamp office cut off her EBT completely.
Here are other stories about how twisted it can be and you can believe it or not, but this has happened to people in my family so this is why my father made it a point to raise us without getting aid of any type:
My family:
when my father was disabled and in the dead of winter the pipes froze in our house and exploded. Well, his disability compensation was still in process and the pantry was bare and things were being shut off right and left because of the lack of income. My mother suggested to approach the welfare office for some assistance until it all worked out. He kept telling her they would not help out. Well, finally he took her downtown to apply. And he stayed outside while she spoke with the casworker. The woman basically told mom that in order to help our family out mom would have to declare my father abandoning his family and then the bills would get paid, pipes fixed, and definitely provide enough money for food for us.
My mother told them to go straight to H-E- double hockey sticks (LOL) because all she was asking for was help for a couple of months. Needless to say my father got his disability and even though it was rough raising a family of five on a measley little retirement check with on and off employment....we turned out for the best. Even though others on our block had basically lied to the welfare department and risked getting caught committing fraud.
My grandmother:
She lived in public housing for years after my grandfather and her divorced. And all she ever wanted to do was own a place of her own. Well, she worked her whole life in a factory and her body ended up paying the price in her elder years. She got every kind of assistance when she lived in public housing and eventually we moved her to live nearby us because she no longer could drive to appointments or basically do anything after her leg amputation. She was able to afford a reasonable rent without assistance and went down to apply for food stamps. They cut her food stamps from $300 to $38 after she moved into a place where she paid rent.
I was so mad that this happened to her, because it was not like an aged, onelegged woman was going to be able to work to supplement her lack of assistance. It seemed so twisted that this happened.
In the end my grandmother was happy to live her final years without total public assistance, even though many times we had to go to a food pantry to help fill her pantry.
So, what do you guys think about how unfair or do you think the welfare system is fair? Do you think they allow people to get back on there feet or are they creating a cycle for people to get stuck on assistance?

The US welfare system isn't fair at all. I think people are stealing from those who actually need it. It seems even if you work you may need extra help and can't get it. If you don't work, you will get taken care of forever. It's almost like they reward laziness. I was making the remark about the disabled or elderly. I was talking about those who keep popping out babies they can't afford to get their public aid allotment higher. This is sad and needs to stop happening but unfortunately there is no way to stop it.

They know what causes pregnancy right? My state is pretty good, but Mitch Daniels fought to make it that way. There is no excuse for more kids than you can take care of. I have 2 myself that I can barely do for, but I have mdwise for them and I got fixed when I had it, so no more kids. I am sad about it, but it is like you said.... Why have them if you can't take care of them. Just because you have welfare doesn't mean you are doing enough for the kids.

No it's not fair at all... I have family members that take total advantage of this, it sickens me just to see this happening... These people (my family members) having kids just to stay on welfare, yes they have jobs and get food stamps and medical assistance.. I don't understand this at all.. I will admit there has been a time i needed help, I walked in the office and asked for help. we gone threw everything and got laughed at.. For a family of 3 one income that is less than 1,000.00 a month 500.00 for rent, phone bill, lights we have nothing left.. Anyway they told me i would get 5.00 in food stamps.. I looked at them and told them they can keep it for someone who is in dying need of this help.. I couldn't believe it.. I did ask about how and why my family members can both work good paying jobs and still get roughly 500.00 in food stamps a month and health.. This makes no sense to me what so ever.. Like it said it sickens me to see this when people are living up there in money and still have to go for help when some people need it can't even get it... Makes me wonder if the government realize why there are so many homeless people... More than likely they don't... this is the true reason why though... Just my oppion...Great subject also..

Yes, the system is totally unfair to people. I know first hand because I have had to get food stamps for year, working or not working. I might be getting SSI and then they will cut off my food stamps to myself and my three boys.
I don't get child support either from the dad's.
I have been barly paying my bills with my son's SSI, but I might be getting it because my health has taken a change for the worst.
But for me to get assistance with cash, I would have to goto work at a work site. If I could work, I wouldn't be asking for assistance, dah!
We are in a depressed area and finding a job is really, really hard to fine. I see people on welfare that drive around in brand new cars and I have one that is over ten years old, how are they making the payments if they are on welfare?

I call it the "Well it aint fair" system. The people who really need it are lumped in with the people who abuse it. Its guilt by association. It's a government system so it basically sucks the money from hard working people and gives it to those who don't want to work. Its Social Security with too much admin involved. I had to use unemployment for about 6 months and I was treated with such disrespect, I have a college degree but they didn't care. I got so fed up with my treatment that I told the guy I would fax a copy of my resume to him so he would stop acting like I was a freeloader, he said he didn't care, I knew what kind of people I was dealing with. I know that there are instances where people need welfare more than others and it seems to be a "who asked first" kind of system. Yes, there are people who raise their families on welfare, they'll never amount to anything, they don't vote or pay taxes, those are the deadbeats. I know that since its a government system its buried in red tape to get anything progressive done right. Its a sad state of affairs when the people who need it for a little while can't even get it honestly and the people who need to get off their butts and get a job will suck it dry and leave only a debit in the system.

Great conversation piece! I know what you mean. My mother was a single mom raising three kids. She worked two jobs to take care of us. She swallowed her pride one day and went to the welfare office to try and get food stamps. They told her that she made too much money and that she should quit one of her jobs in order to qualify! On the other hand I know a person that is perfectly capable of working, who has two children, and she sits on her fat butt and collects food stamps and TANIF. Then she dumps her kids off with people at night and goes out to drink every night! I think the system is totally screwed up. Those of us who are working and trying are punished...while those who are lazy are rewarded!!

For the most part, I am against the welfare system in the USA. I cannot sympathize because I am not in the place of the people who actually need it, but in many cases I believe that it encourages laziness because people feel that they have something to fall back on. For the mothers who had three children and were left by the father, Welfare is needed and well-understood. I KNOW that people need help, but sometimes people just take advantage of the system.

I totally agree with what you are saying. I worked for an agency that dealt a lot with human services. The guidelines then and now are set up so that people that do get a job lose everything and many times before they even get their first full paycheck. What happens then is they are unable to buy what they need. Gas to work is one thing even more now that someone needs money for to get to a job well if you don't have the money how can you keep working? It is really sad and I am glad you brought this to people's attention. I also know that my nephew's son got cancer 2 years back and before he was able to get assistance he was running out of money trying to keep up. He had to stop working so he could be with his son in the hospital which is 90 miles from home. We knew he needed money to help get back and forth as well as pay some bills so we decided to have fund raiser ball tourney. Without thinking someone told the newspaper about it and they did a story on it so we could draw more people. The week it came out human service sent him a letter saying he did not qualify because of the fund raiser. This money was to pay for his things he had fallen behind in not to pay for the future food and things he would need but he was cut off. It took a long time before he was able to be approved again so many of us had to buy the food for him and give him gas money to get to and from the hospital. It really is sad that so many are actually stuck where they are because our system is not set up as it should be.
