Plant trees before marrying... what do you think?...

As part of a nationwide regreening initiative... the Indonesian government is requiring husbands and brides-to-be to plant 10 seedlings provided by the local government... Although a lot of critics say that this is symbolic in a nation that is losing its forests at one of the fastest rates in the world due to illegal logging, mining, new oil palm plantations and slash-and-burn land clearing... i believe this is a wise move in order to educate people especially those about to start a family... regarding the importance of trees in our lives... I hope more countries will follow suit... since the Global Warming problem is not concentrated in one part of the world... but we are all affected... aseretdd_ The idea of planting trees at marriage is innovative and refreshing. I also like the idea of planting a tree for every child you have. I like hearing about other countries. It's one of my favourite parts of mylot. Until I read your post, I had no idea that any nation other than America destroyed its own trees in the name of progress. Your thoughts are well expressed and appreciated.

With this Global Warming issue... countries need to be creative in encouraging its people to contribute in their own little way... and America is not the only one that has a problem with the killing of thousands or trees... that is like a world wide epidemic... thanks for the appreciation and response...

Well, for people who live in third world nations... most of them depend on cutting trees a means of livelihood... it is either eat now... or save the future... the always choose the former... and we can't blame them...

What kind of people are we that we destroy the planet where we live? It doesn't make sense.

it is actually a good idea.it is a good contribution to the environment.at least before marriage,a couple can contribute to the environment.it might also help to ask families to plant their own trees not just in the forest, but also in their backyard.it can educate children on the benefits of trees.

I totally agree with you... but there should also be a sort of follow up to this... to see how many of the seedling survive... most will die... but it would be nice to know that even a few survived and became full grown trees... Thanks for the response and for reviving this discussion...

Hello aseretdd, I read the news. In fact, I read your discussion first before I came across the same news. I think it is a wise move for a country like Indonesia who is losing its forest at a very fast rate. I hope my country will do something too regarding this matter. Now, we always come across news about illegal logging and forest clearing. Thing gets hotter nowadays without these beautiful trees...

Well, we are all affected by the Global Warming problem... and unless all countries will do their share in helping the environment... things can get worst in the future... and what Indonesia is implemanting to have more trees is a unique way of helping... thanks for the response...

planting trees is already one of the requirements of the government here in our place before a couple could get married. i think this idea is very helpful and environment friendly. as we all know, global warming is making it's way in destructing planet earth, and if we will do nothing about it, the next generation will suffer the consequences.

I am glad that the local government in your area already have this policy... but it would be much better if it will be made nation wide... that way... more trees will be planted... since thousands of couples get married everyday... thanks for ther response...
