S/o got a notice in the mail today. Enclosed was a lovely picture of the back of his son's car driving through a toll booth without paying. When asked, his son said he didn't have any money and "Well mom said to just go through the EZ Pay because they'd just send me a letter and make me pay an extra $3." And why didn't she just give him toll money? Well he has to pay $44, not $3. I don't know if I should think "stupid kids" or "stupid parents telling kids to do this!"

I think if it was me I would make his mother pay the 44.00 since it was her wise decision to tell him to just run through the toll booth. I'm sure if he is like most kids there's change laying in the floor board of the car that if he scraped it all up together he would have had enough for the toll~

See my comment on Oreo's response...and it all started (according to him) because he was scraping quarters off the floor instead of watching where he was driving...LOL

In this case i think the stupidity is share and share alike. Yes she was stupid for telling him to break the law but if he is old enough to drive he is old enough to know DON'T break the law! I hope he is the one that has to pay the fine, nothing like having to accept the responsibility for your own actions to teach you a lasting lesson.

See my comment in Oreo's response...it was an accident and a misunderstanding between s/o and I or stepson and s/o or a combination of the two. BUT...he still needs to learn the right thing to do at a toll both if he's going to drive down there on his own!

Sorry but gotta blame the parents for this one - the kid took his mom's word for it. But still he should've known he couldn't get away with it.

On Oreo's response is his version of the story which is different from what s/o told me... But either way, if he's old enough to drive he needs to be responsible and learn how these things work!

I think the proper thing to do would be to go to the toll booth, tell them he didn't have the money and then they would have billed him the toll. I have heard of people doing that before. Usually if you are upfront with them, they are a little considerate. On the flipside, I have heard of people saying they could just blow thru the toll (or ez pass lane) and just be charged a small fine. I never knew what the fine was. I think explaniing the situation would have caused a lesser fine, and would have been more responsible. I wonder why his mom didn't just give him the toll though.
