agent question

does the agent need to be within the same area or state? i have been told no and i hope this is correct due to not being able to find but 2 in my area through a website.. didnt know if anyone else would know anything about this

i have already written 2 i am having a problem with the proposal on the 1st one since most agents want one page and mine is 9 pages when i follow this example that i got off the web so i have been trying to shorten it.. i did a lot of research as far as how to go self publish/agent and chose agent and am stuck.. so i figured might as well find out about the agent and then line them up and as soon as i get my proposal done i will already have it ready.. gotta do something till my writers block leaves..
