Do you have a medical proxy? Do you believe everyone should have one?

Years ago before I was diagnosed as being bi-polar I attempted suicide a number of times. At one point one of my doctors suggested I fill out the papers to have a proxy in case the time ever came when I was unable to communicate or make my own decisions. Since I wouldn't want to live in a vegetative state in a hospital or facility I would want to have someone "pull the plug" if the need arose so I talked with my kids about it. Of course the 3 of them said they couldn't do it and I'm sure they couldn't when the time came but I spent a lot of time explaining the consequences to them and how deeply I feel about it. Finally I got my oldest daughter to sign the papers but she asked that I get an alternate in case she couldn't do it and I did.
Funny story: I asked my daughters ex b/f first since we didn't get along and we hated each other because he was very abusive to my daughter and their kids...he said no because he would rather see me suffer...funny but not so funny huh?
Do you have a proxy? What do you think of them...good idea or not?

Yes, ctry, I really do think that giving someone a medical power of attorney is a good idea because we never know what could happen. My niece was asked to use my sister's poa privilege when her condition declined so rapidly. It was very hard for her to do. I have discussed this with my daughters but not acted upon it as of yet. With your discussion in mind I will make sure to take care of it as soon as possible.

I am a health care proxy for both my mom and my father in law. I would do what thier wishes are if I had to make a decission. I believe in health care proxys 100 percent. You just have to make sure you chose the right person that would carry out your wishes.
