Well I don't know what is deemed as ordinary American, but clearly from how this race went a substantial amount of people in this country would be glad to have a woman as president. Many people who hated Hillary Clinton made it clear that they would support a female president, just not Hillary. The reason we haven't had a female president yet is because the US is still a young country that had serious inequality issues for a long time. Even now I wouldn't say the playing field is 100% level, but it's definitely getting there.

I agree. The people (Democrat or Republican) who won't vote for Hillary do so because of political issues or her personality, not the gender. Personally, I think she's very smart (regardless of political viewpoint) but lacks sincereness.

I think that most americans are open to having a woman president. Thing is that before Hillary, no women ever ran for it that I can recall. Hillary actually had quite a few people on her side but now that she's dropped out of the race there is no chance in her winning.

Several women have run for the presidency long before Hillary Clinton. The first woman to run for the presidency was in the 1800's. Hillary was the first one to have a real shot at it though.

I'm sure you are right. She is the first one that really stands out in my mind. Heck, it took forever before women were even allowed to vote here.

The first woman to run for president actually did so before women had that right.

Well I am a woman so do I still count as an ordinary American? Well I would love to see a woman be president but only if I really felt she was right for the job and had a good head on her shoulders. And I am so glad it's not going to be Hillary.

Hello Ak2008, As an American woman, I can say that I am confident that the USA is ready for a female president, but it must be the right female candidate. Selecting a woman, simply because she is a woman is bigotted and short-sighted. I would be remiss in my duty if I selected other than the most qualified candidate (in my humble opinion). As such, gender is not a high priority to me, in the same way that skin-color is altogether irrelevant. Character, experience, compatible ideology, intelligence, integrity, love of country, optimisism, etc... these are the characteristics that I seek in a presidential candidate. Since 1872 the USA has seen more than 50 women run for the Office of the President. Hillary has come the closest to getting the actual nod. Though Elizabeth Dole gave it hell back in the 2000 race. Below is a link listing female, presidential candidates from aroung the globe. It's a fascinating compilation. http://www.guide2womenleaders.com/candidates2000.htm

I don't care whether they are male or female as long as they can do the job right. The same goes for race. It doesn't matter.

I think we've proven that not to be the case this year, even though Hillary didn't ultimately win the nomination she sure did put up a good fight. She's really proven a lot, I think, and this will lead to more women having the courage to try. Annie
