OK, maybe we can invent something together. I am looking for ideas to keep my house cool without running AC 24/7 Any house cooling ideas? How to save big on electricity bills this summer?

open your windows without opening blinds/curtains/etc. thats what i do. my AC doesn't reach our bedroom properly, so at night it gets really bad. I just bought this pad called a COOL TOUCH, I'm sure you can look for it online, I think they sell it there, for more then i bought it for since i got it at a fair. its a cooling pad which stays cool longer then a normal ice pad. its not ice cold, but cool. i was going to try it this summer when it starts getting hot at night. since last year i did have problems sleeping even grabbing some blue ice from the freezer a few times to help me relax. so i'm hoping this will do the trick on cooling throughout the night.

If you have an attic fan, you could open a few windows and turn the attic fan on when it starts to cool down in the evening. Since warm air rises, the attic fan will pull the warm air up and out, to be replaced by the cool air coming in from the open window. When I was a kid, we had a couple of ancient (to me) box fans. My mom would hang a damp cloth over the front of the fan to create a simple "water cooler" type of air conditioner.

We have huge problem here with humidity, so it is not only about heat.... Yesterday it was 95% humidity and almost 90F outdoors....

Well, that does create a problem. Okay, so the damp cloth on a box fan trick would not be such a great idea. But a dehumidifier might help. One of those would help suck the moisture out of the air, which means the heat has less to hold onto, thus making it seem cooler.

Hi gantwick, The problem in areas where the humidity is real high, you just can't open a window. It makes you feel like your wallowing in a warm, moist wool blanket. It's just awful.

I have seen some people on here who said they put a film over there window to keep the heat out. I talked to my husband about this yesterday. He didn't think it would help but I think I'm going to try it anyway.

I was going to start a discussion and ask who turns their computer off at night and does it save much on electricity? I leave mine on but I'm thinking about turning it off if it will make a big difference in my electric bill.

It sure would be great if we could invent something together...I've never had AC only fans and I'm DYING here...fans only do so much and just circulate hot air..we went from a deliciously cool mid-60s on Friday and leaped to a staggering mid-90s literally over night...tomorrow it's supposed to be near 97 degrees....waaahhhhhh If I could, but then I would have to hire someone pro to do this ceiling fans seem to do wonders...also...I remember someone telling me this trick..you would have to get like a block of ice..station it in front of a fan and that's supposed to make it cool...uh, now where to get that block of ice????

Here's another idea that sounds a bit crazy but works. The other night I made some green tea in the evening, and just for a kick I added about 1/4 teaspoon of powdered ginger into it. When it settled in my stomach it felt like the spiciness from eating a spicy meal (but I wasn't full), which made me start to sweat lightly. I slept with a fan on and felt nice and cool all night. I guess a spicy meal would have done the same thing. I have some friends from India who swear by hot tea on a hot day.

Thanks for the br! I'm glad you thought of trying my suggestion. I can't tell you what I thought about you taking a shower. But I know of a way to save water...

When you invent something, I want to know about it lol. I live in southeast Georgia and we only have a small window of opportunity to have our windows open, that's in the fall and spring. The heat in the south is bad, but when you add the gulf winds in it, it becomes intolerable. The humidity shoots up and you feel like your sweltering. Like a lot of people here we have central air conditioning. As soon as it hits the temp it shuts off, and almost immediately, within a few minutes you can feel the humidity start to rise. Only the AC can't read the humidity and so there you sit. What I did about four years ago was go to Wal-Mart and bought like five or six little tiny fans. I have them everywhere I sit, by my chair, on my computer, by my bed. I was able to cut the AC back so it wouldn't cut on so much. When I feel the heat creeping up on me, I just reach over and switch on the fan. And believe it or not, our electric bill dropped.

I am with you. Humidity is killing us here in Chicago.... I have AC, but as you know can cost over $200 per month... Maybe small fans will help...
