Lick sores

Kai is a happy go lucky Siberian Husky and his health is pretty good at age 10. However, he has recently started licking certain areas and that is resulting in sores. He has not shed his winter coat yet as the weather has been quite goofy this year. We thought it might be a food allergy because we had switched the food we gave him. Now we are back to his original food and we thought he was doing better. Then he started licking again. He gets plenty of exercise and he is not home alone as I am always here. Is anyone else having this problem? I have used lavender essential oil (diluted) on him and that helps for a bit. Does anyone have any ideas about how we can get rid of the lick sores? The vet seems to be clueless.

I have no experience of huskies with this problem, or even dogs. However, one of my Mum's cats developed a similar obsession and would lick areas raw. then once they scabbed he would worry at the scabs and make the whole thing even worse. I'm afraid I wasn't party to all the discussions with the vet so I'm not sure about the root cause, but the answer was some very nasty steroid cream. I wonder if wearing one of those lampshade things around the neck would help a little? If the sores were allowed to heal, perhaps Kai would then leave the areas alone. It could be something as silly as a habit like biting your fingernails.

it looks like you have done the vet thing, so maybe you should try to search the web for some answers too, my last dog , who has passed , did have similar problem, but it was due to an allergy from new grass and such, he had to have a shot and then was put on prednisone for 2 weeks which took care of that problem until next year and then we had to do the same thing over again. if that is your dog in picture it is absolutely beautiful. i hope you find out soon what the problem is. happy hunting!
