Thieves have been stealing diesel fuel from farmers in California. Over $300,000 worth of fuel has been stolen in the past 3 months. "The crooks work around the clock, searching during the daytime for irrigation pumps run by diesel engines and supply tanks filled with diesel or gasoline, police and farmers say. They return at night, with their headlights off, to steal hundreds of gallons of fuel at a time." We NEED our farmers! Everyone is feeling the crunch! But small farmers won't be able to re-coup from continuous thefts. This is just wrong! But who said theives have any honor? The police think they are probably selling "under the table" to truckers who are also trying to make ends meet. That is so wrong!

That is wrong. I do think we will see more and more of this type thing as the prices keep increasing.

With the gas prices steadily going up we will see more thefts from people who normally wouldn't break the law and even more from those who always do. It's sad but it's because with the prices going up, people are having a hard time. I'm in no way saying it's right or that its okay, but it's going to keep happening. That is, unless something is done to bring the prices back down so that people can afford things again.

That similar but yet wrong practice also happening here. I guess it is happening everywhere, however to me it is very appalling and these thugs need to be caught some day. If they can't pay for fuel then don't take advantage of other people by stealing fuel from their car. This makes me angry and surely I will make sure that I won't be their next target. It's best for those home owners who have garage to store their car inside and have the garage locked so it would prevent these petrol thieves.

I agree this is wrong..We have always had thieves and as prices of fuel rises they will likely really stick up their nasty heads..Unfortunely we will always have to deal with thieves......Its a shame that the farmers are having to suffer so much.I also agree we really need our farmers...

Saviour-V teleports in...
Under such circumstances, you might as well chop off the hands of such guilty felons. I believe that there's even a phrase in the Bible somewhere about NOT coveting someone else's property.
On an unrelated, but somewhat related, note...my country has had a number of cases of cable and water meter thefts over the course of the past 2 years. The idiots sold them for scrap metal, too.
Stealing reduces the quality of other people's lives. Under such circumstances, a strong deterrent should be used to prevent these felons from causing more grief to everyone.

Wow ! This is horrible. A thief alone cannot steal such huge fuel in 3 months. If the fuel price is $ 4.59 then 65,360 gallons had to be theft in total and each month 21,786 gallons which stand in each day 726 gallongs need to be theft. So I think something behind the screen. I can add also that if in a month 21,786 gallons diesel fuel was theft from his farm why he did not take any action at next month?

I live on a farm and we've had that kind of problem for years! (At least 20 years) One of the things we do is to have our large gas storage tanks locked, and only those of us who use it know the combo. The locks can't be cut through with cutters. That only leaves the equipment that can be stolen gas from. So those are left where the dogs will bark and wake us up, or locked in a machinery shed. It's a shame, because it costs a whole lot to run equipment and tractors, especially during this gas crisis. When you see the prices on the shelves going up, like for meat, produce, eggs, etc, I'd like you to remember that we farmers are NOT getting an increase in the price we recieve for the goods that go to market...it is the middleman that hauls it, and the store that sells it, that is getting the extra! (That's a huge shame too, for it's driving us small farmers out of business!!!)

It's when I read things like this that it is easy to get discouraged about how much wrong there is in the world and to forget how much right also exists.
I've been reading about giving. Bill Clinton's book Giving is about the millions of people in the world who are doing good. Page after page describes people, individuals and groups, Non-Government Organizations, that are working to reduce world hunger, infectious diseases, improve access to adequate health care, provide adequate housing, improve the status of women and children everywhere. I read it at night before going to sleep as an antidote to the days bad news.
I recommend it for anyone who is feeling like the whole world is selfish and uncaring.

Hi estherlou! Yes, that is absolutely wrong. These thieves are doing more harm to small farmers. I just hope no one especially those truckers shouldn't be buying or patronizing stolen gas or any stolen goods. If no one will buy stolen goods, I think the thieves will think again before they steal anything.
Take care and God bless! Celebrate Life!

This will be the beginning of a long going thing with the price of gas going up and not going down. There is always something going to be done under the table. I didn't think that it was that bad until reading this and now it only makes me wonder what else will get worse for the high price of gas.
There will be people killing each other next over gas and fuel. This is really sad.

There has been alot of disel fuel thefts from farmers in my area lately. The sheriff has told them to put locks on the fuel and to check it often. The place my husband works at is one place that fuel was stolen. It is sad when it comes down to having to steal gas to be able to work (drive your truck) so you can feed your family.

It's not just diesel that is being stolen. I saw a news story a couple of weeks ago that talked about how people are even stealing fuel from regular cars and trucks by either siphoning the fuel out or puncturing the gas tank. If that isn't just peachy enough, thieves have also started stealing copper from electric lines and wiring inside vacant homes around the country so they can sell the scrap copper for cash. Isn't a lovely world we live in?

lol. Yeah it is pretty stupid. I guess they missed that part in elementary school about not playing with live power lines.

I would lough but it isn't funny at all. This is huge ammount of cash and a serious problem. You are right. Thieves don't have honor, most of the times. There are always exceptions so let's leave it just like that. They should really do something about that, couse it isn't going well.
