now in todays market we are at a very interesting turning point. the new blue ray players are begginning to emerge while the dvd player is still going strong. now if your previous dvd player had just broken, it can be a tough descision on which to purchase. the dvd player in the next ten years will infact become obsolete but the blue ray player is very expensive right now and might not be affordable for many individuals. in my opinion, if you need a dvd player now, buy a cheaper one. then when blue ray becomes more popular and maybe moe brands emerge, theprices will go down. then purchase a blue ray player. or you could buy a ps3. that always works!

Hi! For me its always best to get the DVD one. Like you said it doesnt have to be the expensive one but has enough quality to withstand the years until DVD's are obsolete and really phased out. Then that will be the time to upgrade. Blu Rays nowadays are really really expensive and if you are really practical you would ask yourself why would you need to buy one? It would just be an expensive display. Some of its features might be a bit techie that most people might not get it. I think its best to wait for the next generations to come and let them have their fill and use of the Blu Ray players. For me, as long as there are still DVD's out there that I can watch my favorite movies over and over again Im good with that. As for your PS3 statement, wouldnt you think that in time PS3's will be obsolete too?Its just a thought.^_^
