You can check it out, and sign it if you want. It's a petition to get Congress to do whatever they can about the high prices of gas. http://www.gaspriceprotest.com/?g=5%20%20

Signed it. At this point I don't care WHAT alleviates this problem, I will accept ANY solution that forces the prices of gas down close to what it costs to produce it. There is probably at least 50% markup PLUS taxes (which should not be) on top of it, so I bet gas isn't even much over $1 a gallon. Everything else will again become more affordable if gas prices decrease, since all the other greedy folks in the middle won't have to raise THEIR prices as high in order to make THEIR 50% profit.

I can't answer to why gas costs so much, but I can tell you this. My husband is a manager in a local convenience store. The chain has about 60 stores in our area. Their profit on a gallon of gas is only about 10 cents...their markup is very low. "For the first quarter of 2008, the average state gasoline tax is 28.6 cents per gallon, plus 18.4 cents per gallon federal tax making the total 47 cents per gallon. For diesel, the average state tax is 29.2 cents per gallon plus an additional 24.4 cents per gallon federal tax making the total 53.6 cents per gallon." http://www.api.org/statistics/fueltaxes/ Here is a link for what each state is allowed to add to the price of gas for taxes. http://www.gaspricewatch.com/usgastaxes.asp
