Frontloader vs Toploader washing machine

How much experience have some of you had with a frontloading washing machine? Maybe you can help me out here. About two years ago my mom replaced her huge frontloader with a smaller one because she didn't accumulate enough laundry since she lives alone. She gave us the washer and drier, she only had the thing a couple of years, and my mom doesn't buy junk. I love the machines only I've notice my whites are dinger than ever. I have made sure to use plenty of detergent, I now use only Tide. I use plenty of bleach in my whites. I use all the little buttons like the soak and second rinse. And still, my whites are so dingy. I'm thinking of going to colored towels and wash clothes because every thing is turning grey. We're not dirty people. Something isn't right here. What am I doing wrong? Even though these machines can hold a lot of clothes, I still won't over fill it.
