I went to mcdonalds today for lunch and I saw a sign saying that Mcdonalds is not serving tomatoes with any of their menu items until further notice. So I got curious and asked why. The Manager says "Well there was a Incident with tomatoes in the states and we wont be serving tomatoes until further notice, that's all i know"
What Incident????? does anyone know?

There has been a salmonella outbreak recently which was linked to tomatoes. McDonalds decided to take raw tomatoes of the menu just to be save: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080609/ap_on_he_me/med_mcdonald_s_tomatoes;_ylt=An43Ily68yJFtE7o87eKUVes0NUE

It's getting bad.

There's a contamination issue with salmonella in tomatoes. They're easy to grow if you love them. You can be sure YOUR tomatoes are safe by growing them yourself.

I'm attempting to garden.

I don't have land, porch, or even a windowsill. I don't even have a sun facing window, I am growing edibles on my kitchen counter with the help of a florescent light. So far, I've got bell pepper & tomato seedlings, a potato plant growing in a plastic bag with drainage, and herbs.

Keep in mind that it is not all tomato types and not tomatoes grown every where. Like grape tomatoes and other small varieties were already deemed safe. It was mainly the larger ones. Also, many places the tomatoes are already getting the okay. For us, all tomatoes locally grown in our state have already been given the green light for being okay.

If you buy local produce from local farmers, what you are eating is probably not contaminated. The local paper announced when the USDA released the local grown tomatoes. Since this "scare" happened I have been in various stores ALL of them still have tomatoes on the shelves, no notices posted.

I just did a discussion about this...it's not just the tomatoes served at fast food places or restaurants, but tomatoes one buys in supermarkets as well, and they can't pinpoint the source of where these salmonella contaminated tomatoes are from

Salmonella has been in a lot of tomatoes and people have gotten sick. They're just trying to be safe. There is a news article here on mylot about the incident and about how Mcdonalds is choosing not to serve tomatoes until further notice.
