I've always wondered just what kind of conditioning an ac does to the air. As far as I can tell all it does it cool the air. Is there something that I'm missing? Do air conditioners do more than just cool us off? Have you ever wondered about this?

Treating the air in manner which cools it is a form of consitioning. Air conditioners change the condition of the air within a certain square footage.

I think that it cleans the air so that's a form of conditioning. I don't know though. I think that it's just a name that stuck. Hope that helps. You know how some names just are originated and then they stick?

This an excellent question, and the timing couldn't be better... The temps here in the East are going through the roof! :) Here's a "How Things Work Link..." http://www.energyquest.ca.gov/how_it_works/air_conditioner.html And a trip over to Expert Village can show you how to do darn near anything! :) http://www.expertvillage.com Some cool fun from YouTube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=uYBq96POKbc
