I've been trying to network my computers with no luck. One is a desktop running Windows ME and the other is a laptop running Windows 2000 Professional. I'm not sure which computer is the problem, though I would assume it would be the desktop. I found a step by step site that was very helpful, yet I still have nothing. What am I missing?

How exactly are you trying to network them? Are you using a router? Or are you using the internet connection sharing built into windows? I would recommend using a router. They are quite simple to setup. If you are using a router i find the best way to get it all working is this. Turn off the main computer that has the modem and router connected to it. Then hook up everything and turn on the router then the computer. See if you can login to the router. If you can then go about configuring it.

I'm just trying to directly connect them, with no internet involved. I only need them connected for long enough to transfer some files. I'm not using a router, just an ethernet cable from one computer to the other. I think I'd have a hard time trying to find a router that will work on windows ME anyways. Nothing works on it anymore.

Ahh ok all you need is a crossover cable then. Oh you would routers aren't specific to operating systems. As long as a router does the type of connection your isp uses it would work. DHCP PPPOE etc.

Why take so much pains when you could easily get a usb crossover data cable to transfer data across the computers for a few bucks. They dont mess with ip addresses and are a lot simpletr although some slower but for two pcs that doesnt matter.

That's going to be my next step. I'm just gonna buy a usb cable and see if that works.

Here's a link to Microsoft's instructions on setting up networks in Win2000. It's a bit lengthy and doesn't seem to mention whether or not it can connect a network with ME, but it's worth a look I think. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/Windows2000Pro/reskit/part4/proch21.mspx?mfr=true
