Playstation 3 freezing issues??

Help please my hubby is about to explode! We bought a PS3 about 3 months ago, of ebay so no warranty(dumb move) and it has started freezing up and now will not play any PS3 games. It will however play older games with no problems. What could be the problem. My hubby SAYS that it will not even load PS3 games now, it starts to then returns to the main menu popping up with the word error and different #'s. Anyone had this problem? or know how to fix it?
