Question about software synthesizers (for gurus)

I have a problem here. Not long ago my computer stopped playing midi files. After trying to figure out what was the problem, I noticed that Microsoft GS Wavetable Software Synthesizer was not present on my system. Somehow, it disappeared. And as a result I am not able to play MIDI files on my computer anymore. I tried searching for other synthesizers, but all those I found, like WinGroove, Vsc, SY_XG and others are not compatible with Vista, which is my OS. I'd really like to play some old DOS games, but with no MIDI music, my experience won't be full. So, if anyone tells me a solution, I'd be very thankful.
