Will you drive miles to save pennies?

All my life I've known people that will drive all the way across town to buy groceries because a grocery store has a sale on something that will save the buyer maybe 20 cents. Now I can see getting sales flyers from all the grocery stores, starting at the opposite end of town and working your way home buying only what's on sale at each store, or at least I could until gas got so high, but to drive across town because one item is on sale is not saving money. Do you feel like it's worth the drive to go all over town buying sales items, or would you be ahead just going to the nearest super market, rework your weekly menu to take advantage of any sale they had and save gas.

The stores I shop are all within a 2-3 mile radius of each other, so yes, in my case it's worth shopping the three stores for the sale items. I shop SuperWalmart, Aldi, and Meijer. Aldi's always has great prices on produce, etc., so I always get those items there. SuperWalmart rarely offers sale prices, so I hit Meijer for their "buy one get one" or "buy one get two free" items and then head to Walmart for the remainder of my list. It really depends on where your stores are located as to whether or not it's worth spending the extra gas $$ to get there to save pennies. We are even walking now to Aldi's for non perishables since the store is only 1.5 miles away from our home. It's a good excuse for exercise and to get a few items too.

I kind of envy you having a variety all in a cluster. I live just outside of town, and my nearest grocery store is 7 miles away. The walmart nearest to that is 5 and they don't have much more than my local store, so it's really not worth my time and gas unless I have to go to the post office or Dr. office anyway.

It is according to what they have on sale. If a store is having a good sale on meat then i will get my meat at that store but a lot of times i will go to another store for my other stuff. But in my case i can take a route into town that pretty much takes me by any store i want to go to so i don't have to back track. If i can't plan a way that i don't have to back track i as a general rule do not bother. And even then i have to save enough that it is worth the aggrivation.

I value my skin and won't shop at my nearest store. I don't, however drive all over town for sales. Mostly I go to a nearby Walmart, but there are a few things I like that I can only get at HEB. I don't drive far out of my way to go to one of those, just won't shop at the nearby one. Too dangerous.

I think that the gas and the discount sort of balances each other out. So, the person is not gaining anything, and sometimes losing money in the ordeal. If the person is on the other side of town for a doctor's appointment or something, I can understand swinging by the local supermarket there. But, it seems that some people go out of their way only to lose money.
