Does your dog like to take a bath?

My pet dog Muffin doesn't seems to like it. He usually does accompany me when I go down the groundfloor, but when I started bathing him there he stay on the top floor and watched me go down. If he hear I am opening the gate at the back, then he go down and I run out. If he doesn't hear it open, he just stay upstair and watched me. If I go up to try and pick him he just run and avoid me. He seems to notice I am going to give him a bath. So now I have to pick him up before I go down and bath him. I usually just turned on the faucet, help him in between my leg, wash and soap him. I am only using a detergent soap for him, and I don't know if that's what he don't like, or the cold water from the faucet. Maybe I shoulh heat some water for bathing him? After the bath he fell lively again and run around the house tp get dry. I am not toweling, I just let him shake the water on his fur. I usually give him a bath every two weeks. How about you guys, do you bath your dog regularly? What kind of soap do you used. How about the water, do you warm it up? Do you towel the dog after the bath? Do you think bathing the dog is beneficial to it or us human owner? Appreciate your thoughts on this.

hello robert, i can imagine you guys running around LOL anyway to answer your question. YES, i do give him a bath at least twice a week a month ago for almost four year but lately since there is a drought problem i make it at least once a month. he have his own shampoo, towel and perfume. i like him clean and smell clean coz he sleeps next to us and he likes to be clean as well, he knows when it is time for bath coz he sees his towel being placed on the bathroom and or the shower head being put down at the bathtub, that is his signs for his time LOL sometimes he will follow me to the bathroom but if he is not in the mood he will crawl under the bed and will want me to call him at least three times before he comes out. he always have a warm water, sometimes hot if it's winter but if its hot i prefer to give him tap water as it helps him feel better. i know some vet advised that we shouldnt give dogs bath always as it ruins their skin but our dog is very much into bath time. sometimes if i forgot to give him a bath and we went outside and he knows he is dirty he will place himself next to the bathtub and wait till i realized he wants to have a bath, so that makes it easier. i guess, he is very used to it coz when he is a puppy i used to give him at least 3 times a week bath coz he likes to play outside and i dont trust the floor outside china coz they like to spit and something else LOL so i make sure that he is clean coz i like to hug him and he sleeps next to me. anyway, hope your dog is enjoying his bath now, hehe make it easy for him and try to make it fun as it may cause trauma in his case that maybe the reason why he is not enjoying his bath. anyway, have a good one. takecare

I don't think my dog likes getting a bath. He doesn't really like being wet it seems but he is very good and just stands there and lets me give one. He doesn't fight me or anything. I give my dog a bath outside and use the water hose so i can't warm it up. I gave him a bath about once a month or more often if he needs it.. I can't give him a bath too often because it'll dry out his skin and I use oatmeal shampoo on my dog. Hes skin will get dried out if I use other certain kinds. I use a towel to dry him off after. I think that is his favorite part getting dried off! he goes crazy wigging his body and stuff as i'm trying to dry him off lol its funny. I think it is beneficial to us humans and the dogs. They may be dogs but you know how good it feels to be freshly clean out the shower! I think some dogs might feel the same way even though they might not like getting a bath, i'm sure they feel better after and they certainly smell/feel better to us humans.

You have a very obedient dog if it keep still. I have to hold my dog because he'll escape if I don't hold him while bathing. At least he keep still if you are holding him, once you let go he is gone in no time.

Hello sameroad, I haven't tried putting a leash on him. He might struggle and hurt himself. It's better I hold him in between my legs where he keep silent while I am bathing him. It's ok. You deserve it. Nice avatar you have.

Yeah, He's a very good dog. Have you tried putting him on his leash while giving him a bath? if you tie it off to something then you wouldn't have to worry about him getting away. :P and thanks for the BR

my dog love's to take a bath. what she doesn't like is when her face gets wet. but if it's just her body, she's fine with it. infact, when i'm watering the plants she always chase the water and she's so active whenever she's wet. she loves running arpund while she's very wet. but when she's dry she's just sleeping...lol

Hello anaknitatay, My dog also has fleas because he likes to stay always outside the house and I think he gets it from other dogs. He sometimes stinks if I don't bath him a long time. Maybe you should help your brother bath his dog.

Hello julyteen, That's true. Our dogs need to take a bath for them to smell good and free of lice. It benefits us also as owner to have clean and good smelling pet even if the dogs don't feel like it. Have a good one!

It's summer! get your dog a kiddie pool and play in there wiht it. In time it will think the water is a fun and cool place to be! Over time, introduce the shampoo. It never has to know you snuck that part in! (Worked for us!)

Hello Gargoyle0134, That's a good idea. Unfortunately I don't have a kiddie pool now. Maybe a large basin will do. . It is rainy season in our place now and my dog is wet regularly and I just towel him off once in a while.

Hey robert. While I was in junior high school, my grandparents owned a dog. I did give it a bath. If it was me who gave it this, it will be happy to enjoy it. If it didn't, it seemed not to be happy to accept. Generally, it enjoyed the bath. Because it's summer and cool water made it feel comfortable. We didn't do anything special to it. Just like what you mentioned. However, we did towel it so that it wouldn't make the floor dirty. I do know some dogs that don't like taking a bath. I don't know why. But some said that if we give the dog a bath since it was little, it is going to like it.

Hello chrissieatu, That's a good observation, it really pays to start them young. I did not bath my dog when he is still, it may be the reason he don't like it.

I used to have a female shih-tzu that loved getting a bath, having her hair brushed and putting bows in her hair. Now I have two male dogs. One is part chiuaua and part terrier. He's only 14 1/2 pounds, so it's easy to bathe him. The other is about 55 pounds and still a puppy. Part boxer and part hound dog. I was just telling my hubby that we're going to have to bathe him outside this summer, 'cause if it will be easier to catch him in the yard and just use the hose.

Yeah, with a big dog like that it will be a mesh if try running around inside the house. Better bath him in the yard, I think he'll enjoy it.

My dogs are not keen on it but they get a bath pretty regular. I bathe them in luke warm water as dogs have a lower body temperature than humans. I do towel dry them afterwards too but it is importatnt to bathe your dogs especially if they tend to be the type to go out and get real dirty in the garden like mine do as it can get rid of fleas and other mites

Yeah, bathing the dog is a good way of getting rid of the mites and fleas. Unfortunately, my dogs like to go out of the yard and play with the other dogs in the neighborhood and he gets infected with fleas and mites again.

My dog hates having a bath. Thankfully we have recently discovered that if we bath him outside in the kid's paddling pool, he makes much less of a fuss than if we bath him in the shower. That's one less thing to worry about. Bathing your dog too much actually strips its hair of its natural oils, so you should only bath him occasionally. Unfortunately my dog has a habit of rolling around in particularly unpleasant things. When we're giving him a full on bath, we fill the paddling pool with warm water and put him in it. Then we wash him with a flannel and 'Bob Martin Gentle Wash Shampoo'. If he's just a little bit grubby and he doesn't need a proper bath, we spray him with a dry dog cleaning spray and comb it through. He doesn't seem to mind that because he likes being brushed and rubbed down with a towel. He just doesn't like getting the wet part.

I agree with you the dog prefer taking bath in pool of water. I'll take note of what you said and have my dog take bath occasionaly. Maybe brushing him with soap and water will help. He don't need to get wet to be cleaned and smelling good.

I think so too. One of this days I am going to buy him a good soap and shampoo. His fur is failing now and he lost some weight. I'm not sure why, maybe because he is busy trying to get her first mate. He has a lot of competition and mostly bigger than him.

Yes. I can't even run water for the kids baths without him running into the bathroom, sitting next to the tub and staring at me. Waiting for me to tell him it's ok to jump in. He just loves water. We want to take him to the lake. We took him to the park and they had a small lake. He seemed to have no fear of the water what so ever. If it wasn't for the leash he would have ran right on in.

My dogs get a bath once a week because I cannot stand the smell of stinky dog and I hate the dog hair that they shed. It is hot here (100s) so they get bathed in the backyard in the sun with our hose back there. My older dog doesn't complain about getting a bath, she just stands there and takes it. I don't think she likes it but she stands there still enough for me to get the job done. Our puppy is terrible! He runs from you and when you finally get him he yelps and thrashes around. He is half the size of our other dog but I would rather bathe the bigger one. I let them stand out in the sun for about ten minutes to dry off some. Then, I towel dry them to get the rest of the water out.

Good work emma412, after years of bathing your older dog get used to it and doesn't complain anymore. The younger one is still full of adrenaline and in time migth get used to it too.

Yes very much, my dogs are yellow Labrador. They love water and easily get destructed when they saw water running from the faucet, when I open the hose of the water they knew immediately that they are going to take a bath.

Labrador are the most popular breed of dogs and they are used extensively for fowl hunting and I guess they love to swim better that taking a bath.

my puppy doesn't like to take a bath too. she can sense the time that im about to give her a bath. she just sense it. i used shellguard as my puppy's soap. actually im thinking of warming her water first but it would take more time. my puppy have her own towel. i usually wipe her up so that she won't chill. as far as i know, dogs are really afraid of water. it is just their nature to hate water.

It never occur to me that dog don't like water. I always thought they like taking a bath because after you are done they look ok and smell fairly good. I just learn here that dogs has a hard time breathing if their skin pores get wet and it myabe the reason why they are tense when you get them a bath because you let the water touch their skin and not just their fur.

My dogs Lily doesn't like bathing either. Whenever I tell my mother that I'm gonna bath her, I have to talk in whisper so that she won't run away before I can do that ^^. But after having bathed she often run around the house like she's been back from heaven ^^. I just can't figure her out. And she seems like the hair-dryer in winter, it makes her falls asleep ^^.

No, whenever I take her into the bathroom or near a hose outside she gets really tense, and if you try to pick her up she will burry her claws into you. Usually, I have scratches on my arm after giving her a bath.
