Who taught you how to drive?

My dad taught me directions and I learned to drive in a 90 foot long station wagon that felt like I was floating a boat. I also learned how to drive on the dieway during Drivers Ed. It was me, Vince Romo and Lynn Ross, the three "R", I'll let you figure out my last name, and my poor instructor had his foot on the "special" brake all the time. Tell me your fond memory about learning how to drive.

I can't say I have any fond memories about learning to drive. Once I learned all the little persnickety things they'll flunk you for on the test (at least here in North Carolina), it kind of took the excitement and enjoyment out of it and made it a more stressful experience. My dad was the one who first began teaching me. For the longest time, I would not drive with my mother because she is the ultimate backseat driver and everything you do makes her either flinch like crazy or worse (not a good match for a hypersensitive personality such as myself). I also had two very good driving teachers (that had the special break on their end). One of them was especially fun to be in the car with. We had a lot of the same interests and he had even met Garth Brooks (my favorite performer), so he was a little more than just a teacher - he would actually talk to you casually as well, which helped take a lot of stress off of the scenario. Once I was confident enough, I finally started to drive more and more with my mother as she was the only one who could take me during the day when my dad worked. I think I was always made a lot more progress when I actually had somewhere to go because then I actually had reason to be getting in the car and driving somewhere. I did a lot of "practice driving" in which I would just go around town for an hour or two, and that was helpful education-wise, but the anticipation wasn't present. I would plan to meet friends at different places a whole lot over those couple of months so that I would have an excuse to go somewhere which meant more practice time... so that was one pleasant thing I got out of the bargain.

Ultimatley, I learned in Drivers Ed but my uncle used to take me prior to that and it was actually funny because he used to take me in the cemetary to learn how to drive and I always practiced using an automatic, but one day he said he wante dto teach me how to drive a stick shift and he was explaining the gears and the clutch and as I became overwhelmed, I said oh don't worry about explaining all of that I just wont use the clutch and his answer was GET OUT and FORGET IT!.... I never learned how to drive a stick shift!

My Dad and of course, a driver's ed teacher. I learned in a huge Buick Riviera. I can't remember how old it was when I was using it to learn how to drive but, it was at least a decade old and that was 19 years ago. That car had a never ending front. So, while all my friends were learning how to drive in Ford Escorts, they all questioned me endlessly about how I could park my huge Buick Riviera! LOL! So, my dad taught me. Yup! I hated it! He was mean, made me cry and tortured me. He made me go to the cul 'd' sac and back around it and, I couldn't get any further than 2 inches from the curb or I would have to start over and try it again. This went on for about 2 hours before it was too late and I had school the next day and my Mom was about ready to start yelling at him. And, no...backing around a cul 'd' sac has never been something that I have had to use in all the years I have been driving. Oh, and I should point out that he traumatized me so much, and had me thinking that I wouldn't pass any driver's test if I couldn't pass his, that I waited 3 more years before I got my license! So, he screwed himself. He could have had another driver in the house but, I was too scared and couldn't get past it for 3 years. LOL! I know! I am a big old baby!

LOL! Yea...it was really tough! And, I don't even think he made me a better driver! LOL! If anything, he made me scared of driving! Which, yes...it is good to have a healthy fear of driving so it keeps you on your toes but, he paralyzed me with fear for 3 year! That is not productive! LOL! I can tell you, I will not be doing that to my child someday...if I ever have a child!

I can't imagine the fun you were having. When I learned to drive I would go everywhere, my parents were glad to have me gone, until I didn't come home on time. Nah, you're not a big baby, it doesn't sound like you wanted to fail, no harm in that.

My Dad was due to teach me to drive, but we had a big row before we even got in the car & I ended up buying lessons from a normal driving instructor! My very first driving lesson came from an ex boyfriend, in the car park of a hotel. I was dreadful!

We had drivers Ed..its mandatory here and offered as a class in high school I also was taught by a combo of both my mom and dad. I could drive a tractor YEARS before i could drive a car legally on the highway. My first time meeting a semi truck on the highway i was so scared i had to pull over, my knuckles were white i was shaking and my sister in the backseat with her skidoo helmet on was heckling me.

LOL its ok to laugh. I didn't find it funny at the time...nor did i find it funny for the next 6 months when she insisted she MUST have head protection from my driving. But now 11 years later I find it hilarious and I tell her I can see her doing the very same thing to her own children (if she ever ahs any) when they learn to drive.

My Mom taught me to drive. I just enjoyed spending the time together. She was very patient and instructive. I miss those times we shared together. She was my best friend. One of my ex boyfriends taught me to drive a standard shift, but that didn't go over to well since all he knew how to do was yell and put me down all the time, but oh well....glad its over.

My dad taught my brother and I how to drive in parking lots and the backroads of our town. Our very first lessons were, however, on a riding mower cutting the grass. lol Once we had the mower mastered, only then would he take us out in the car for more practice. We both passed our driver's ed with flying colors.

I learned in a station wagon, both at home with my sister part of the time, but also when I I have 2 older sisters WITH CARS, so I wasn't always in the big station wagon, but I didn't mind driving it......I was driving!! The most fun was the similator we had during driver's ed. A steering wheel and a screen in front of us as we drove. On the days when our scores didn't count, there were more people run over than was necessary.

My Dad taught me how to drive in a 1959 Ford standard transmission. After we got home from the first lesson, he told me that if he had drank milk and ate ice cream before we left, he would have felt like he had a milkshake. My Dad was patient with me and taught me a lot about road courtesy and safety. Too bad drivers nowadays don't learn the same things. If you learn to drive on a standard shift, then you can pretty well drive anything.

First thing I've ever driven was one of those go carts when I was 7... I liked it so much I practically drove it everyday behind my house after school... It wasn't too long after first driving that thing to actually getting out on to the street... I first took it out on the street, not a main road or anything, but out in the street far enough to pick up few small groceries for my mother... Since then, I've been all over the town with that little thing, going to friend's house, going to school, etc... When I turned 10, I drove a car for the first time with my brother... I drove to myself to back of the school & he drove it back home... I've been driving a car ever since...

drivers education - learning to drive
I had drivers ed and the only one in the car that had never drove in their life. I tried to tell him but he wouldn't believe me and had me out on a very busy and difficult street. Long story short I ended up going off the road. No damage done to anyone or the car. But that day scared me enough that I didn't learnt to drive for another 2 years.

OMG "90 foot" long! Is it a car, bus or a train. I think you mean a 9 foot station wagon. By the way I was about 20 when my father bought me my first car. I did not know anything about driving when we got it. My uncle who is a veteran driver came to teach me and we drove together for about 2 days with an "L" board. L stands for learner and it is mandatory to have such a board on the front and rear of the car if you are learning to drive. So I learnt for only two days and my uncle left. After that I was on my own and started driving around with confidence and without the "L" board.

My dad start off to teach me some basics of driving but honestly i dont get it.Its just me who could not get it what he was teaching that time.Maybe im not yet really interested at first.I could only get about ten percent of it.I also learnt from the way he and my brother drive. I took lesson(driving school) with only a few instructors;supposely a lots of differents instructors..i don't know to consider im lucky or unlucky to get about four different instructors. Two of them kept repeating themselves to me on lessons i have. That is so frustrating. The feeling is so troublesome for me.I just don't like. From there,i started to really endure learning how to drive; whats my dad had been teaching me about driving,i could recall back and later i understand after having the lessons.Im kinda a slow learner.Slow and Steady wins the race aytes!! Its not really a nice memories for me while learning how to drive. There's many dissapointing moments. At least,im able to complete it and now i could drive officially.

Hello gitfiddleplayer. When I was learning how to drive, one of my sisters and her husband used to take me driving in his yellow Mustang. I think it was a 1967. It was a really easy car to drive. I did eventually get my license, although I flunked the driving test the first time I took it because I didn't parallel park very well. I passed the written test with flying colors, though!
