Backstabbing in the workplace, any personal encounters?

For some people in the workplace, backstabbing is an easy thing to do and a means to get what they want (eg to get promotion). For the naive ones, they just don't know how to handle it. I had a few encounters with backstabbers, but luckily, without any big impact on my career. I have avoided these people eversince. Anyone here who experienced such? How did you handle it?
