How we can stop this horror?

This poor lady describes an ordeal of torture and rape she endured for 19 hours at the hands of this sadistic person. He threw bleach at her, ordered her to gouge her eyes out, tied her up, set fire to her apartment. When she finally begged him to kill her to end the pain, he said she was not good enough for it. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,364983,00.html Please, what do you think society can do to prevent this from happening again, ever, to anyone? What can we do to stop this type of mental illness??

I do not think we can stop it, but we can definitely prevent more of it from happening by stiffening our criminal laws. I believe that the reason there is so much crime (of any nature) in this country is due to the crime, almost always, outweighing the punishment. I've heard stories of drunk drivers killing people on the road after they have already had 8 or 9 convictions of drunk driving previously. That should never be allowed to happen! But, sadly, it does. If our punishment system were not only increased substantially, but enforced effectively, we would eliminate a lot of these horrible, sadistic crimes. Some will slip by, of course, because some of these sick, twisted people have no criminal record previous to a heinous crime such as the one you mentioned. Sometimes there are clues that a person has severely warped mentality, but are largely ignored by the medical profession or those who could made a difference. Sometimes these people ARE caught and punished, but let go back onto the street to do it over again. The U.S. has a way too soft judicial system. In some countries, your hand is cut off if you are caught and convicted of stealing. While I think that's a bit extreme, our form of punishment is more like a slap on the wrist. It's sad, but I don't see it changing any time soon.

I would add that laws should be passed giving private citizens more protection from the law when they act against these criminals. The amount of times private citizens have been charged with crimes ranging from illegal possesion of weapons to murder for protecting themselves is truely a disgrace.

I agree with you! Criminals have more rights than their victims! I have heard stories where the criminals actually file charges against their victims for doing no more than protecting themselves! It's not just the laws that get victims in trouble, it's the criminals themselves! Also, I full believe in the "eye for an eye" system of punishment. If someone is convicted of shooting another person, that criminal should be shot. If the crime is stabbing, ditto for that. "Criminal's rights" indeed!

I am in near shock after I got done reading this . It is hard to believe that their are such cruel and sick people out there that walk this world. How can a person see another suffer so and just go on abusing them like that in all ways? There is no heart left in that man. He should be treated with no respect and be punished in a way that a law shall not allow. Evil criminals like this should just be thrown in a hole. He should have no rights in jaw at all , he should never have anything made easy for him . My fiance always says that what they do to someone you should have it done back to him . I dont think he is serious , but some people after they do a crime have it way too easy. I don't think there is anything we can do to stop this from happening. The world is filled with too many people like this. Just always be sure to lock all doors and windows, and yes buy proection , becauase you just never know if it will happen to you . You have to fight and fight ! Just like this amazing survivor did. I hope that she can find some peace and live a normal life after that.

I agree with your fiancee...the same thing should be done to that man as he did to that woman. I have 2 dogs....most people stop when they hear them barking. Better locks, I agree.

This kind of mental illness can not be eradicated. However, the number of incidences of these people acting out like this can be dramatically reduced. HOW? You may not believe this, but when people such as this monster see the judicial system showing compassion and understanding it encourages them to act on their most violent and disgusting impulses. These people (violent, sadistic monsters) do not think like most other people. They are predators just looking for the opportunity to commit their crimes. When they see a judicial system likely to be soft with its punishment in the unlikely event they do get caught, they commit even more crimes. Want less violent sadistic crimes? Do not elect or appoint liberal compassionate judges or liberal compassionate legislators. It is that simple.

I think we are all in agreement on that. We need to go more conservative.

good day. I don't know what evil can seduced a man to do this kind of horror. We all commit mistakes but not of this kind. It seemed that this man don't have a gram of sympathy in his heart. Pure evil if I may say. I know that evil do exist, existed in the past, present and will in the future. I remember the serial killers and in the likes of hitler. I guess we should deal with him like we did hitler and of his cohorts in world war II. We deal with him harshly but within the compounds of the law.

This is well past mistake...I agree, he should be dealt with harshly. I hope we will find out what his sentence is.

I think we have to pinpoint what causes people to do it. One thing that I think plays a major factor in people is what we are exposed to in society. I think that some people do have mental illnesses, but that you have to have some sort of coherence to do something like that for hours one end. The types of things that young children are exposed to get more shocking to me as time goes by. Their minds are like sponges when they are young so we have to be careful what our children see and learn, but sometimes you can't control it.

You are right, we have to find out what causes people to do something like this. Kids are exposed to an awful lot. People have the TVs on awful things and think that the little ones are playing, but they are taking it all in...and they become desensitized to violence, we can not control it 100% but we do have some control. And we can sit down and talk to them about it, that it is wrong to do things like that. I think a lot of it starts at home and a lot is environment and genetics.

i think it is really hard to stop this type of crimes as long as those crazy and insane people are still out there... sorry for calling these people insane... but they are... if they are not insane, they won't be doing this kind of act to an innocent lady... i think they deserve a life sentence and let them rot in jail... take care and have a nice day...

I wish I had the answer. That story was horrific. That woman was amazing though. She had the presence of mind to study the mans face, and remember what he looked like, then to identify him in court...amazing. I hope this man is in jail the rest of his life. There's nothing that can be done to him that could equal her pain, but keeping him behind bars for life would be a good start.

I don't think there's a 'cure' or 'fix' for this, the person responsible should just be shot. How would the woman ever feel safe o able to mov on with her life knowing that h was still alive out there somewhere. No, shoot him and let her see them do it.

I really wish I had an answer to your question, violence seems to be rising and getting more sadistic. I feel so bad for the people enduring such torture I just don't know what we can to to stop this. All I can seem to do is pray for these people and hope that God takes care but from what I have been seeing not even God is stopping this and he has the power to do all....
