Should a woman be able to dress scantily in public?

In some societies, you cannot dress anyway you want. A woman cannot parade around in a very short skirt, and wearing a shirt with her breast heaving out. A man cannot walk around without a shirt. In the American society, it seems to be more and more acceptable as time goes on. If a woman dresses in such a manner and she is raped, should she be responsible at all? I think a man should be able to control himself. However, I think it is wrong for a woman to dress this way in public. What is her purpose when she does it? Isn't it to get some kind of attention?

In Canada the Genders have Equal Rights. There is no discrimination against women as to how they dress. If a man can go topless in Public, a woman can go there too. Its been challenged in Court and the woman found not guilty. The exception is -if she causes a traffic Jam, or is disruptive. I believe in the equality of the sexes. Everyone in Canada is equal!

My brother-in-law lives in Canada. He has never told me that he has seen a topless woman in Canada.

The point is Not that women go topless in Canada! The point is that they have that Right. (there are many places in Canada where men would not be permitted to go shirtless)(it bugs me that people don't get it throught their pointed little heads- - Women in Canada HAVE THAT RIGHT! Canada is one of the few Countries in the World to make the Genders EQUAL.(And Canadians are Very proud of That!)

I think a women should dress like like a lady in public, that is just my personal opinion. But on the other hand if she gets raped because of her dress sense, it is outrages. Statistics show it is just an excuse for a horrible crime. What if an 80 year old women, gets raped, I am sure it won't be because of how she was dressed. Just like a man, or a women should not be robbed because they were wearing expensive jewelry.

Annie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're Back!!!!!! I missed you!!!!!! I think it is wrong to rape a woman for any reason. Yet, I think we should be responsible in public for the way we dress. Why look like a tramp when you can look classy!!!

I don't mind guys without shirts, if' they are clean and fit. It also doesn't bother me if women wear short skirts and low tops, that is if it's not too excessive, and they don't have flab hanging out all over the place. I'm surprised at how many women and teen girls who think they look good in tight or skimpy clothes, and they just look like pigs to me. I don't think women should be held responsible if they are raped, no matter what they are wearing. Some women do stupid things though, and sometimes they end up learning the hard way. The current media making it seem acceptable to act sluttish should be held accountable in some way.

I think there is a certain type of woman out there that will do anything for attention. We are will be moving eventually, and we are looking into different neighborhoods. The things we have seen....

I think we have to be careful here with the differences in morals and responsibilities in different cultures. You strongly disagree that a woman should be scantily dressed and that is your opinion. In some countries like Canada your other correspondent said they took it to court for a woman's right to do that and no doubt in many Western cultures people of both genders would get angry and defend their right to have an opinion. What's wrong with getting attention? Isn't that what men do when they go out in a smart suit with some gold jewellery? And no, if a woman is raped, the rapist should be severly punished. It's all a question of perception and who is to say which point of view id 'right'?

Why would a woman want to dress scantily in public? Would they rather be admired for their figure than their personality or intelligence? I would think that if I were a woman, I would want to dress more modestly so as to attract less of the wrong kind of attention.

I agree. Unfortunately, I see a lot of women and teenage girls today who need a lot of attention, and they will do whatever they can to get it. They were taught values or maybe they did not have good role models. They lack self-esteem.
