How is that Tom Bombadil was not featured in the movie version???

When u start reading the book you are amazed byt eh ages shown for some of the characters but none beats the record of Tom.He is as old as the green earth itself and even the old Fangorn is afraid of him . Some may even contest, he was the best bet that middle earth had to preserve the ring. Because it didnt have any effetc on him. Even old Gandalf talks about him with a tinge of respect in his voice . I may even dare to discern that Sauron couldn't have a beter opponent than Bombadil, what with his jolly songs & forceful sprightly behaviour. How is then such a character is not even mentioned in the movie with 12 hours & more of it!!!? Its grossly unfair on Peter Jackson's part to shun a major protagonist in the name of continuity. What i hate most is the adaptation of Frodo's dialog with Bombadil as Merry & Pippins talk with Treebeard.

Something have to get cut, you can't have everything form the book in the movie. I guess the writers of the movie didn't think as much of this detail as you do :)

i definitely agree that the wqhole book cannot be reproduced but atleast a passing mention would have done justice to the character that saved Frodo's life twice ??Dontcha think so??:-)

I think Tom was awsome. They really should have put him in at least a little bit.

Hi surtaynevondoon, welcome to mylot and have a happy stay here. Yes, I need to say that when I watch the first and second part of the movie I think about Tom Bombadil too. But I know that many things need to be cut in a movie and I think that they cuted Tom because his character don't have a continuity in the story. It is why I like the most to read a book ever instead watch the movies only. Have a good day.

This question is actually discussed in the special features of the extended version dvd of the Fellowship of the Ring. When Peter Jackson was putting together the script, of course he was faced with the challenge of having to choose parts of the book to cut out. Obviously the main focus of the plot was Frodo bringing the Ring to Mount Doom. Bombadil played no direct role in that objective. For purposes of plot, he just saved the hobbits from a spot of trouble that they ran into in the Barrow Downs. Take out the Downs and there's no longer any major need for Bombadil. It was one of the biggest changes that Jackson made, and I'll admit that it did make me a bit sad because in the books Bombadil was one of my favorite characters.
