Red Velvet Cake is a little hard to come by. It's not your average cake.
My daughter tried it one time and liked it. After months of begging, I gave in. I found a recipe and gathered all the ingredients. Most important, the red food dye. Let the baking begin_
I'll skip to the end. By the time I was done, there was red food colouring everywhere. I'm talking about the counters, the sink, the floor, my fingers, my hair _ no, not my hair only kidding. And try to get it out and off of everything?
So_ Any Red Food Cake Stories out there?
Any stories about red food colouring?
Any Horror Cake Stories?

I never made that particular cake but I made red devil's food cake. I loved baking for my family, had an old Betty Crocker cookbook that unfortunately got thrown away a few years ago. I remember making a fudge cake that was so rich it was almost impossible to eat more than one piece.
Horror stories, just one. The kids and I made a pound cake and instead of using sugar, I grabbed the container of salt--unlabled, I thought I knew what it was. Man, that cake was AWFUL!

dragon_ no way. That is a horror story! You used salt instead of sugar? That was a lot of salt. Did you actually try to eat the cake? How old were your kids?
I had the old Betty Crocker cookbook as well. I lost mine, or it got thrown away in one of my several moves.
I'm sure the salt got labeled after the pound cake incident.

Oh, we all three tried to eat a piece! The looks on our faces would doubtless win an award these days on reality tv and such! We threw it away, of course. And the container did get labeled; from then on, I learned not to trust my memory with things so similar in color and texture as salt and sugar!
The kids still mention this, years later. We always get a good laugh so I'm very glad it happened.

No, but I have two slices that is sitting right now in my refigerator. This cake is very delicious. Although, I have no clue on how to make it, but I do know how to eat it!
No horror stories on a cake for me. But what I do know, is that this cake can be very messy indeed.. But it is very delicious..

My grandmother made red cake. She made it for special occasions and she made a boiled icing with it. I think it's called boiled icing anyway. It was a real treat for us growing up. Now red velvet cake seems to be more prevalent - I think of her when I see the cake. It has it's own special taste - I hate to think it's the food coloring, but it's very good I think.
I can't imagine getting that red food coloring off stuff. What did you use - bleach?

Thank you for BR!
I don't think I saw the photo of the cake last time. Sure does look like what I remember. I looked up some recipes meanwhile and most of them had a tablespoon or so of white vinegar and a few tablespoons for cocoa, so not real chocolately. Maybe that's what makes the taste. The icing on a few of the recipes was a cooked icing. If I ever bake a cake again, I'll have to make one.

Here I am whittby. Don't give up on me! Stupid computer hackers.
The velvet cake doesn't get its distinctive taste from the red dye. I wish I did remember the ingredients. I can't remember a boiled icing. I blocked the memory out, but the red dye must have traumatized me. I think I used soft scrub and bleach to get it all out!
What a beautiful memory to share. When you see the cake you think of your grandmother. It sounds so poetic.

I know I might look like an ignorant person but I have to admit that after more than three decades living in this planet, it's only now that I've heard about this type of cake. Stupid, ain't I?
Anyway, I've always been fascinated by cakes. And I'm a sweet tooth by the way, from cakes to pastries, brownies, ice cream, ice cream cake, you name it! Unfortunately, I haven't tried baking an actual cake even once. My reason then was because we don't have an oven in the household. But now, I can't use that same reason anymore; because my parents gave me and my husband an oven as wedding gift more than five years ago. However, we decided to leave it in my parents' house in the province for the time being. Until now, we haven't used it because we are still paying off most of our outstanding monetary obligations where almost all of my monthly salary goes. Hopefully, after paying them all off, we'll be able to save for our own house and lot.
But if you have some cake recipes, traditional or otherwise, including internet sites covering this topic, kindly do share them with us.
Thanks in advance and happy baking. Regards.

mykmari_ Trust me, no one thinks of you as an ignorant or stupid person. I think I won that award yesterday.
I like your story about your family and your stove. It helps me learn more about you.
I don't bake much anymore because I'm all alone now. I still make pumpkin bread from a recipe on this website

I lost my carrot cake recipe, but this one is close to the one I used to bake.

Okay? Before you know it, all your debts will be gone!
You can save these websites for later when you get your oven. Keep in touch.
