bring them home?

I am ready for the war in Iraq/Afghanistan to end. I want our troops home as much as any other citizen. I want our service men and women back safely and out of harm’s way. I see a lot of similarities between the war we are engaged in right now and the war we fought in Vietnam. The last thing I want is for us to lose more brave soldiers in battle in this or any other war. I know that sometimes war is necessary, but know this doesn’t make accepting the reality any easier.
However, I know that our people have a job to do there. I know that the American GI’s who have died there have died for a good reason. As much as I want our people home, I know that if we pull out now, the people who have died there to this point will have died in vain. They will have died for nothing. Saddam Hussein was taken from power. He was found, tried for charges, and got the death penalty he deserved. It would be easy to say that it is time to pull out of Iraq. Part of me agrees with that statement. We accomplished a good mission there. I now feel that we have a chance to make a difference in the lives of those people over there, though, so part of me feels that we have an obligation to stay there and help those people build their government and their economy. We need to help them learn to manage their economy and create jobs for themselves. So, I don’t feel that we should pull our troops out of Iraq completely. I am all for a partial withdrawal, but there needs to be people there to help ensure security for the citizens so that they can perhaps start learning how to live lives free of tyranny and oppression.
Our job in Afghanistan is not done. Our mission there is not complete. Osama bin Laden is still alive. Our objective there will not be accomplished until he is dead. Perhaps we should start to withdraw some of our troops from Iraq and reposition them to Afghanistan and other areas so they can concentrate on finding bin Laden. He deserves the same fate that Saddam met, and I want it to be our troops who find him. I want it to be our people who kill him. So, that being said, as bad as I want our forces home….we can’t leave now.
