Do you know there is a great substitute for apple, which used to be costly. Tomatoe, yes, is more than a substitute for apple. When you can't afford to buy apple, go for tomatoe, which is otherwise called 'apple of poor'! It has got all the inputs and even more of what an apple has! You can have it in any way, tomatoe rice, tomatoe juice, or simply as it is you can eat.

When the tomato was first introduced to Spain it was not very popular as a food. Since it belongs to the nightshade family it was thought to poisonous. It was originally used as an ornamental plant and the fruit was the size of the cherry tomatoes of today. They did not readily gain popularity until the late 19th century. They were called the love apple. They are full of Vitamin C,A,and K. as well as potassium.
Here's another interesting fact about tomatoes. The name that this fruit was given in various languages reflects some of the history and mystery surrounding it. Lycopersicon means "wolf peach" in Latin and refers to the former belief that, like a wolf, this fruit was dangerous. The French call it pomme d'amour, meaning "love apple," since they believed it to have aphrodisiacal qualities, while the Italians call it pomodoro or "golden apple," owing to the fact that the first known species with which they were familiar may have been yellow in color.

I don't know if I would call it "Apple of poor". It would be better to call the apple "Tomato of poor".
Tomatoes are more expensive than apples any day of the year where I live.

Yes, the tomato is very versatile, but it has hardly been a poor man's food lately. It is the most frequently plant grown in home gardens. Nothing can match the flavor of a vine ripened tomato. Take the place of an apple, though, I think not. They are two different fruits and are usually used in entirely different ways. I can only think of three ways that are the same, juice, stewed and sauce. Who would eat a dish of plain tomato sauce?

Here, tomatoes cost about as much per pound as they do for a gallon of gasoline -- around $4. Apples are like $4 for a 5lb bag that contains 10-15 apples. Sadly, they all taste kind of gross from the markets, here, unless you've got a decent produce market.
I can't wait until the tomatoes start ripening in my garden! (Also can't wait until my friend's apple tree starts producing and I can 'steal' some from him!)
