What is the best way to get a stain out of clothes???

I have grey and white stripey jumper which has a slight orangey colour stain down the front (I cant remember what it is or when I did it!!) and was wondering what products people use to get rid of stains?? I have washed this jumper since so it may be washed in now! When I wash my clothes I use washing powder and comfort. I have never used any stain removers as I tend to buy things that people recommend and havent had any good stain removers recommended!! Thanks for all your hints and tips!! x
