Do love and dementia mix ?

I was watching " 50 first days" yesterday night. And then I read somewhere online about how an old man and his girlfriend were kept apart by the son/ daughter after he/she caught them in the act because they had dementia and hence couldn't comprehend what was going on. And it kinda made me wonder if having a relationship with a person with a memory disorder(Example: Drew Barrymore in the movie) like dementia is an ordeal big enough enough for the person with the disorder( Example : drew again) to not deserve to have any relationship( A normal relationship is out of the question i guess). Or well was it right for the "old couple" to be kept apart. I don't mean to be insensitive , its just that I am uninformed
