I'm beginning to wish that I'd paid more attention to some of the things my Grandmother did - the things she cooked and how she managed to feed her family with the small amount of food that she did! I'm thinking that we need to consult the older generation that lived through the depression to advise us in dealing with the high food prices we're experiencing. I can remember that my Grandma never let ANYTHING go to waste - I guess we could take a lesson from the way that generation lived.

I was born in 1947 and my mom never let anything go to waste. No leftovers were ever tossed out, 1 chichen went along way, dinner, and soup. She'd use lots of potatoes, beans, sausage, ground beef. We ate good and I never left the table hungry, there were mom,dad ,and 4 kids. meatloaf, speghetti, sausge and german patatoe pancakes/with sour cream, hot dogs and beans, potatoe salad.... to name a few. She used cupons and cheked what was on sale! There's lots more... tdemex

Yumm - potato pancakes (i.e. potato patties) are so delicious. I used to hope that we had leftover mashed potatoes so that we could make potato patties. Do you remember how your Mom made the German Potato Pancakes?

Hi there New Tondak! My husband's aunt is like that too. She used to have an eatery in the city when my husband was in high school and thankfully, my husband got some of her techniques in cooking.

Hi newtondak, you are right. Bad times teach us to be frugal. I never let anything go to waste because I think that in the world when many people don't have food to survive it is a misdeed waste food. But when we have money to buy anything we want, people tend to waste things. I buy only what I really need and some extras this way I never have food to be wast. I also use all my leftovers. The old people grow up knowing this and we must learn with them. Many years a go I have bad times in my life so I learn and still doing it untill now.
