How do you deal with your pain?

This week has been a very high pain week for me. Nothing I do can seem to control it. Normally the pain meds prescribed to me take care of it. I've also tried other methods in the past such as the hottub, ice packs, massage, a TENS unit and even a parafin wax bath for my hands. What do you do/use to control your pain when it gets this bad?

I take Tylenol 3's when my pain gets severe and that usually works. If it doesn't, hot bean bags, hot showers, hot baths... lots of heat helps. I'm wearing a hot bean bag on my neck this afternoon. I think it's hurting because of the way I was sitting while watching my daughter's soccer game last night. It was very windy and cool. The wind probably put a stiffness into my upper back. I used to take 6-8 Tylenol 3's a day until I lost weight from exercise and discovered Magnesium/Malic Acid supplement. I take 3-250mg. capsules a day and it helps tremendously. Fibromites are lacking in magnesium which aids in over 300 bodily functions. Magnesium with Malic Acid is the key here though. I now take 1-3 Tylenol 3's a day. I lost 40 pounds walking 3-4 days a week for an hour and changing to the better eating habit of 6 snacks a day as opposed to 3 meals. I eat more whole wheat but still can't eliminate sugar from my diet completely. What I'm trying to say is that exercise helped me get to a point where I don't need as many pain killers as I used to, and the Magnesium/Malic Acid also eases the pain. That doesn't mean I don't still have bad days. I do - especially when I'm sick and run down. Sleep does help as well. Good luck!

Thank you for your response. I hadn't heard about the low magnesium issue for those of us with Fibro. I don't have Tylenol 3, but I have been on Vicoden for years but only take it as needed.

Tess - Are you acidy? Have Gerd/reflux, etc? If so, do everything you can to reduce that and it will reduce your pain. No acid food or drink - and chew some TUMS if possible. Take a warm shower - that helps decongest your body. Use any topical cream that has Camphor in it. On the parts that hurt the worst, and on the Tender Points near to that part. Can you take a decongestant/ expectorant product? Like Mucinex? That will also help relieve the problems. Anne at FibroFix

Try to get your mind out of pain. I mean concentrate on other things. I know it is very hard. Try to hear songs and try to take your mind to some other things. Well take your hottub and ice packs regularly. I hope you will find relief very soon. As time passes, I think most probably you will get better.
