Did you try to start in Safe Mode? What happened? Could you try to restore from Safe Mode?

Try running in safe mode. After you turn on your computer, before the Windows logo shows up, press F8. Then select "Safe Mode" When Windows boots to safe mode, try running a full system scan with an antivirus. Don't forget to update the virus definitions. If that still doesn't work, then I can only suggest you to get help from someone who has physical access to the computer. It's really hard to troubleshoot a computer without having access to it.

If safe mode does not work, try re-installing your operating system using Windows XP CD. Do not choose clean install, just choose upgrade. It will fix the corrupted registry or file system without deleting your current OS. Let me know if you need the walkthrough...
