my cat is overweight and instead of buying the weight control food (i find it a bit expensive) i was planning to make a switch to a raw food diet. has anybody tried this? i was able to find a good recipe to follow but am a bit hesitant because of salmonella and other bacteria. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Raw food is never a good choice for domestic animals. The issues you raise are the most prominent, but also there are animals whose digestive systems just are not able to handle raw meat.
Weight management food is expensive. The best option here is to reduce the amount of food your cat eats and provide some kind of exercise for it.
Don't use the free feeding method of leaving food down for it to graze on all day, set up a schedule for 2 or three meals a day (depending on the cat's age) and stick to it. It will take a few days for the cat to get used to that, but it is healthier for the cat. Allow about 30 minutes for the cat to eat it's meal and then take the food away until the next meal. It may sound cruel, but it really isn't. And your car will complain at first, but I promise he/she will get used to it.
The practice is much the same as a human diet. Reduce the calorie intake and burn off the calories by playing. Trust me, you will see a difference in just a couple of months.

Here is the site you need to go to that has all the information you need about the raw food diet (BARF) for cats:

Don't feel guilty, I do it too even though I know it's wrong. One of my cats is skinny but neurotic, but the other one weighs 23 pounds. And it's not fluff, he is solid. lol
